Rumor: Wii U to offer downloadable GameCube games?

A very small collection of people were probably let down to find out that Wii U, while backwards compatible with the original Wii, won’t play GameCube games. While we bet the majority of Wii owners didn’t even know they could play games from the purple lunch box’s mini discs, but it’s always sad to hear a system losing features. Though don’t consider the Cube dead yet, as a recent interview suggests that you’ll be able to download GC games to the Wii U… for a price.

Above: May we suggest a game to launch the service?

In an interview with NintendoGal, Nintendo exec Amber McCollum was asked to comment on Wii U’s GC snub. Amber had this choice quote:

“… Nintendo’s history usually goes back one system.  The Wii was compatible with GameCube and Wii U will be compatible with Wii and that’s pretty traditional in launches from Nintendo… Actually the GameCube discs will not be compatible with Wii U, but a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare.”

Above: May we suggest another?

It seems very natural for Nintendo to expand its successful Virtual Console business on its next console, though this possibility, which Nintendo has yet to confirm, asks several questions. Will the controls transfer well to the Wii U’s innovative tablet, or will we need to keep our Classic Controller Pros handy? And what about size limits? GameCube games take up a good deal more space than your standard Nintendo download of a WiiWare or N64 game, are Wii U’s storage options up to the task? Will Nintendo milk the releases like it did on Wii’s VC or give us a healthy smattering of quality titles like Mario Sunshine, Resident Evil 4, and F-Zero GX right off the bat? Most importantly, which GC games do you want to see downloadable first?

I will just use my gamecube to play gamecube games.
  • hughesta - July 21, 2011 12:28 a.m.

    This is the best idea.
  • SparkleDevon - July 21, 2011 12:32 a.m.

Pikmin, Sunshine, Windwaker, and many more. I hope they won't cost more than 20 dollars ._. Also, I realllllllly wish that it was backwards compatible. I was heartbroken when I heard it wouldn't be.
  • GringoStar - July 21, 2011 12:33 a.m.

I would expect it to as the Wii plays N64 games. Here is a list of some games I would like to see being made for their virtual store: Doshin The Giant (Import) Eternal Darkness Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Super Smash Bros. Melee Soul Calibur II Super Mario Sunshine Luigi's Mansion Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness

Make them in HD Nintendo! But even if they don't I will buy every GC game that I have lost, have been scratched, or never had a chance to buy (Wind Waker, Luigi's Mansion, Sunshine, etc.) if they are released.
  • ReachTheseNuts - July 21, 2011 12:56 a.m.

SUPER SMASH BROS. FUCKIN' MELEE! That would be the perfect way to tide over players waiting for the next SSB's game to hit retail. Brawl and Melee? I think thats pretty fuckin' sweet. They're both still very respectable fighting games to this day and a metric fuckaton load of fun
  • hybrid616 - July 21, 2011 1:04 a.m.

if they end up using the tablet for GC games, the screen would make a good replacement for games that required the use of the GBA (final fantasy crystal chronicles, four swords adventures etc.)...

I really hope I can just exchange my physical Gamecube games for the virtual ones, I have some great games that I just can't get rid of, but don't have enough money to rebuy...Though I highly doubt I could.
  • BackwaterRifle - July 21, 2011 1:13 a.m.

This really was not a concern for me as I Keep all my consoles, and they all work perfectly, with some jury rigging
  • QWERTYCommander - July 21, 2011 1:19 a.m.

@GringoStar Doshin the Giant was an N64DD game. Anyway... Mario Kart: Double Dash Wind Waker Super Mario Sunshine Super Smash Bros. Melee Pokemon Coliseum/XD:GOD Games that have probably no chance of coming, but still would be cool to see: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3/4 SSX Tricky/3/On Tour Killer 7

It's not that big a deal, I won't get rid of my Wii so that I can continue to play my GC games, but I feel that if the functionality to emulate the Gamecube on the Wii U is there for the downloadable titles, why can't it also play that same title from the disc tray? I'm also worried about Nintendo's pricing. I stocked up on tons of used GC games to play on my Wii for next to nothing. Is Nintendo going to come out with $20 and up downloadable GC titles? If so forget it, I'll just buy the original used.
  • WTeen8 - July 21, 2011 1:29 a.m.

This should surprise nobody. Anyway, I'll keep my Wii around for GC games I laready own (Melee, Sonic Mega Collection, Crazy Taxi) but want to download some I never got to own. (Sunshine, Wind Waker, Luigi's Mansion, Wario World, Mario Power Tennis, Eternal Dark (Maybe), Beyond Good and Evil)
  • Oblivion2500 - July 21, 2011 2:02 a.m.

Please don't make more than $20 each. It would be awesome to have achievement support if Wii U games are get something like that. AND it would be awesome if you make them High Def and Widescreen!
  • victorjaime - July 21, 2011 2:34 a.m.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Super Mario Sunshine, Windwaker, Super Smash Bros Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, Resident Evil 4 and Luigi's Mansion. That's a decent start-off list.
  • GringoStar - July 21, 2011 2:43 a.m.

@QWERTYCommander It also got a Gamecube remake. If I'm not mistaken it was released only in the UK and Japan, skipping out North America. That's the version I was speaking of. :-)
  • GringoStar - July 21, 2011 2:46 a.m.

@Victorjaime Why would they release Resident Evil 4 when they remade it for the Wii? Here are more titles I'd like to see anyway: Viewtiful Joe Legend of Zelda Four Swords Adventure XIII F-Zero Star Fox Assault
  • D0CCON - July 21, 2011 3:06 a.m.

Why not make us repurchase items we already own instead of just giving us backwards compatibility? Sony did it, so it must be cool, right?
  • hughesta - July 21, 2011 3:57 a.m.

How does Luigi already have one Boo when he faces the first Portrait Ghosts. WHAT SORCERY IS THIS
  • tturchan96 - July 21, 2011 5:30 a.m.

All the great classic Gamecube games would be nice, since my brother traded in almost every Gamecube game we ever owned to buy Rockband while I was away at college.
  • PhantomDave - July 21, 2011 5:40 a.m.

Jeebus Cripes..... Nintendo I'd like you to meet Sega. Sega...Nintendo.
