Retailer reveals Arkham City alt costumes for Batman… AND BEYOND!

He is the terror that flaps in the night! Okay, wait… Now I’m getting all of my favorite 90s cartoons confused now. That’s not entirely my fault, since a New Zealand retailer recently posted a picture of three exclusive pre-order costumes for Batman - and GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY - one of them just so happens to be the caped crusader Arkham City star Kevin Conroy first made famous: BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES!!!

Above: Batman Beyond

Let’s start from the left. That strange alteration is a highly sculpted take on The Caped, or rather, Winged Crusader from Batman Beyond, a WB animated series that began broadcasting in 1999. The story takes place in the future where an elderly Bruce Wayne has decided to hang up his cape, and teenaged Terry McGinnis takes up the Bat mantle in a sharpened, more minimalist costume.

In the middle is the outfit you might not recognize, and that’s because it stems from the Batman: Earth One series which DC announced years ago, but has yet to see the light of day. According to GR’s comic poobah Henry Gilbert, this limited series is not unlike Marvel’s Ultimates label, in that it’s setting out to tell a different, more modern day origin story behind the Darkest of Knights.

AH HA! And here’s my personal fav, here’s the hyper-hand drawn Batman: The Animated Series Batman. Up until Christopher Nolan came along, this was how Batman was best remembered off the page, as DC showed a remarkable amount of balls with its mid-nineties TV series, which was considerably darker and moodier than what was then passing as kiddie fare. Not only did Batman: TAS essentially set the bar for the tone and style of DC’s animated division to this day, our hero was brought to life by none other than Kevin Conroy, the current voice of Batman in Arkham City. For many of us, Conroy will always be the perfect Batman!

So how can you whip your Batarang around these exclusive pre-order alt costumes? Well, unless you wanna buy the game from Australia, there’s not a whole lot you can do. There’s tone of confusing pre-order incentives floating around Batman: Arkham City, but don’t let it get you dizzy, friends! For one, it's almost a certainty that US/UK retailers will recieve these at some point. Add to that, these are Day One DLC bonuses, and you can probably rest assured they’ll be made available to everyone, probably for purchase, immediately following the game’s release.

While officially-made alt skins are awesome, I must say, I'm a little dissapointed at their execution. I have no attachment for Earth One (the default skin has the same feel to me). And the Batman Beyond skin reminds me a helluva lot of a created wrestler from Smackdown vs. Raw. That said the TAS skin looks ABOSOLUTELY PHENOMINAL! For that alone, Rocksteady can have half of all my money. The other half is theirs too if we get a full TAS game. (Please? :D )

I desperatly want an Adam West costume. With BLAM! effects and everythings :p And a Nolan Dark Knight costume... That would be sweeeet!

No Valley-Bat? I'm guessing that they left any reference to that Bat-Man out so they could still be in the running for game of the year.

The Animated Series skin beats oll of 'em by simple virtue of having the right VA.
  • BurntToShreds - August 3, 2011 5:18 a.m.

Batman Beyond was surprisingly good for its premise, "Teenage Successor to Batman".

Love them all, I wish the Batman Beyond was thinner like the animated series, but I'll take all of those.

When I was a kid I watched beyond. Good times...
  • BlackElement17 - August 3, 2011 12:01 a.m.

I like all of of them

Where's my Batman of Zur-En-Arrh, Batnipple, and Adam West Batman skins? I think the Beyond skin looks rather odd. It would look better if it was stylized like the TAS skin, but I guess the body shape would be too different for that...

Wahay! Mighty Ape made a GR article. Saw these the other day on there and must say I'm quite looking forward to playing as TAS Bats.

I wish there was a Joel Schumacher's Batman skin along with Nolan's armored version and Burton's stiff one.

You're actually missing one out. There's another costume with blue gloves and cape. The blue and grey instead of black and grey.

*Looks at Batman Beyond Costume* And suddenly I care about Arkham City.

Glad to see so many people are as excited as I am. Kevin Conroy is MY Batman, now and forever, and that TAS skin is f***ing orgasmic! NOTE TO US RETAILERS: You get that Batman: The Animated Series skin as a pre-order exclusive, I'll probably buy the game from you. Maybe two!

no offense to Frank Miller's Dark Knight suit, but it kind of looks like Adam West's Batman is getting a cameo
  • HankVenture - August 2, 2011 10:14 p.m.

I dont really are for the beyond suit.. it just has to much detail. I feel it should be sleeker or something.. I mean its still sorta neat but just.. off putting
  • 510BrotherPanda - August 2, 2011 10:14 p.m.

Unfortunately, Chris...a bat can't peck at your nightmares quite the same as a duck can. That's why you call DW for that kind of trouble... Nice to see some variety in these costumes.
  • Darth_Griffin - August 2, 2011 10:08 p.m.

Fingers crossed that the Beyond suit has all the capabilities it did in the show. Stealth, rocket boots, etc. But that is probably just me dreaming again.
