Pokémon trading cards getting free browser-based game

If you're a fan of the Pokémon trading card game, get ready to take it to the next level - an official online version of the head-to-head card battle adventure is on the way.

Pokémon Trainer Challenge will be a free browser-based game in which players can choose pre-constructed decks and compete against opponents online. Some of these decks will be direct copies of upcoming theme decks for the real-life Black & White card sets coming out this spring.

Everything looks to be faithfully recreated, including the card mat, prize card layout, and even coins. It is the first time an official online version of the card game has been produced.

This isn't the first Pokémon TCG video game entirely, though - there was another version for the original Game Boy. As someone who played through that, I thought it was a pretty faithful representation, and liked the RPG aspect of it. This online game won't feature the same adventure or story as the Game Boy title, but it is nice to see another game based on a card game based on a game.

Trainer Challenge is "coming soon," and will be playable at www.pokemontcg.com.

Such memories. I used to play the TCG from the beginning up until around when the Neo sets came out. I remember heading to Toys R Us early every weekend to play for my badges, then head literally next door afterwords to go to work at Wal-Mart (where I was able to secure some boosters for myself before we stocked them, hehe). Had a deck for almost any situation. Needless to say, this excites me. Being able to only choose from pre-constructed decks is a little disappointing, but something tells me they will probably eventually change it to where you can start with a pre-con deck for free, then later let you build your own deck and just charge for booster packs. And yes, I remember the Game Boy version, used to play that religiously.

@Shenlong4517 Yeah I remember that, it taught me how to play the game in the first place. It was a lot of fun, I use to play it a lot too.

Am I the only one who remembers a Pokemon card game game for the PC? My cousin had a copy and we played it extensively.

The only free browser "game" we have for Magic is a booster draft simulator where the cards are always the same. Yawn.

I wish there was a way to use your own Pokemon card collection from home... 1st gen ftw!

I have a feeling this can be something that will get very addicting, even if I am not a big fan of pokemon.

The Vulpix card looks pretty suggestive

I learned that you battle with the cards instead of just collect them when I grew out of Pokemon.

So it's basically the Pokemon TCG version of Duels of the Planeswalkers? Awesome!

The avatar creator looks F-in' stupid, but the card came part looks interesting. Haven't played the IRL TCG in years...
