Pokemon Black and White spotlight: Marakacchi, Ishizumai, Zuruggu and their evolutions

Another week, another set of brand-new Pokemon from Black and White to discuss. This week we've got a lovely cactus to share with you, along with a duo of crabs reminiscent of an old friend from Red and Blue, plus a pants-wearing lizard with unique typing. Let's take a closer look...

#063 Unova / #556 National
Species classification: Cactus Pokemon
Water Absorb – Restores 1/4 of total HP if user is hit with Water-type attack
Chlorophyll – Speed doubles during sunny weather
Dream World abilities: Storm Drain – Immune to Water-type attacks; raises special attack one stage when hit with Water-type attack; all opponents' single-target Water-type attacks are drawn to the user
Location found (Black/White): Resort Desert
Wild hold items: Miracle Seed (rare)
Egg groups: Plant
Capture rate: 255
Gender ratio: 50/50
Experience at lvl 100: 1,000,000
Base stats: 75 HP / 86 Atk / 67 Def / 106 SAtk / 67 SDef / 60 Spd / 461 Total
Effort values: 2 Special Attack
Evolution family: None

This is another Pokemon that has to fight against its own stat distribution, but Marakacchi still has some good moveset options as long as you're not completely focused on offense. Marakacchi can effectively use Grass Knot though, and Wood Hammer is still a powerful STAB option despite Marakacchi's lower physical attack. You could go with Leech Seed for attack/recovery too, but Synthesis might be a better option to recover more HP at once. You can't go wrong with Water Absorb or Storm Drain, which ultimately comes down to whether you're planning to use Marakacchi in single or double/triple battle more often.

To be honest, from a battle perspective you've got other, superior pure Grass options this generation, so we have trouble seeing Marakacchi as more than just one for the collection.

I watched someone use the cactus against a Sun team and it dominated bc of its second ability. The bug rock types look like paras and parasect but are closer to anorith and armaldo which I taught earthquake back in gen three and it wasn't easily taken out unless faced against a wailord or surf and such lol. Zuruggu/Zuruzukin are just straight up unique and can't wait to try them all all out bc I preordered both games last year just as they popped up on the list at Gamestop lol

Wow...I should pay more attention to these. Otherwise I would have missed Zuruggu/Zuruzukin as potential members for Team Smugglers :D Glad to hear it's also a good Pokemon. Zuruzukin is hereby nicknamed "The Punk"

Um I have a question: Why would Earthquake (a ground type move) be a good STAB choice for Ishizumai and Iwaparesu, who are Bug/Rock types?

Everyone is going to use the lizard. Stock up on flying-types, people :P Captcha: "Trade, Porcomon!"

I can tell that the lizard is going to be overrated. The cactus is nice to have but there are better grass types to have.

Zuruzukin is definitely going on my team, that typing of his is pretty awesome.
  • Spartan11794 - January 23, 2011 1:09 a.m.

Marakacchi should be used in Double/Triple with Water weak partners and storm drain also, anyone else disturbed scrafty's hood is zurugu's head skin

Zuruzukin is a major competitor in Gen V. Considering the buff they gave to Drain Punch(60 power, 5PP -> 75 power, 10 PP) you could run that+crunch along with Moxie and dragon dance, so you suddenly get a really really bulky sweeper that can threaten an entire team!

My Pantslizard pretty much beat the crap out of the Unova Elite 4 single-handedly! The guy's awesome.
  • SteampunkJim - January 22, 2011 10:32 p.m.

Yeah, I'm loving the pants lizard. Psychic tends to wreck my teams in general, so immunity will be good, plus I love fighting... Looking forward to it.

Bulbapedia says Paras looks a little like a cicada larva though. Hmm… the baggy pants lizards are pretty cool.

Zuruggu has an intense look on its face

That crab reminds me of a cake.
  • Pocotron - January 22, 2011 8:14 p.m.

Oh, sorry for the double post, but Ice Punch, Crunch, Drain Punch and Hi Jump Kick with the shed skin ability make him a total monster in battles.
  • Pocotron - January 22, 2011 8:11 p.m.

Pantslizard is AMAZING. Not only design-wise but with the his defense as well.
  • jpbr139 - January 22, 2011 8:10 p.m.

I like the cactus, but it looks a lot like a medabot
