Pokemon Black and White set new one-day sales record

Don't think for a second the Pokemon craze is past its heyday. In just one day the newest entries in the long-running RPG series surpassed sales of more than one million units.

According to Nintendo's press release this morning, in their first 24 hours on sale in the US, roughly 1.08 million copies of Pokemon Black and Pokemon White were sold, making it the best launch day in Pokemon history.

The previous record holder was the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl in 2007, which saw launch day sales of 780,000 units.

"These sales numbers illustrate the continued strength of the Nintendo DS family of systems. Already established as the nation's best-selling video game platform of all time, the installed base of more than 47 million makes it the ideal hand-held for developers to reach a huge gaming-focused target audience," said Nintendo of America's corporate communications director Charlie Scibetta.

Pokemon Black and White mark the fifth generation of the Pokemon RPG series, bringing the total number of collectible monsters to 649. We've posted a handy Pokedex for each and every one.

Can you identify all of them?

I have been playing Black non-stop and I'm headed to victory road now. I have to say I was skeptical about the strange looks of this generation but I have warmed greatly to then since playing and I'm loving this game in every way. @Personamanxx Okay good I'm not the only one

I helped with that number thanks to my purchase of White. Love the game to death. I haven't felt this way while playing a pokemon game since the original Silver and Gold. It's reignited something that dimmed down from Ruby/Saphire onward. This could be because I'm forced to use nothing but new pokes or the way a game can feel new while still retaining that feeling that's been around since I picked up Pokemon Yellow those 11 years ago (and being 17, that's pretty impressive). I owe Pokemon for getting me started on videogames. Now to find a Litwit, make it a Chandelure, find 5 other pokemon I want, raise them to level 50, and join the WiFi scene. That alone will have me playing this game for years, let alone the plot, elite four, and the after game.

I'm assuming that, as far as the Pokemon series is concerned, sales records are measured using the combined sales of both games, right?
  • talkraider - March 8, 2011 11:05 p.m.

Pokemon firered is enough for me.
  • MattCrinos - March 8, 2011 11:02 p.m.

  • Crabhand - March 8, 2011 11:01 p.m.

I was a day one purchaser. It's really a phenomenal entry in the series and definitely something I would recommend to past players.

I wish there was a way to see the demographics on who bought the games because I'm curious to know how many were sold to people over 18+. Like how many kids bought the game compared to adults who wanted to start a 'brand new adventure' since this is the first game to have 151 completely new pokemon.

@richardwelck Although I agree CoD should eat it, it's the record for the series, not the top sales record set by Black Ops. OT: Also bought it first day, but unfortunately I haven't had much time to play it (only up to town past first gym). Schoolwork sucks And this was something I think I have to share: "Oh hey guys, sorry I was playing Pokemon. This game has a... has a... it has a way of..... of..... oh s**t what's an Audino neat" (egoraptor on twitter) I don't know why but that just made me crack up
  • Personamanxx - March 8, 2011 10:33 p.m.

I bought it First day as well. A mighty fine game. It's kind of lame, but I'm legitimately excited every time I encounter a new Pokemon.
