PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale public beta begins tomorrow

The battle begins early for Sony mascots and friends this week. Sony today announced it will open a public beta for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale on October 16 for PlayStation Plus subscribers and PS Vita owners, and on October 23 for all PlayStation 3 owners.

Beta fighters will be able to try out Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Colonel Radec, Sly Cooper, PaRappa, and Fat Princess across two stages in four-player and two-versus-two online tournaments, with friend invites for the latter. PS3 and PS Vita players will be able to compete in the same matches with cross-play.

The brawler will release on November 20 with cross-buy, meaning players who buy the PS3 version will receive a complimentary download code for PS Vita. For more on the upcoming smash-and-mash-up, check out nine reasons why we're excited for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Follow these directions: Playstation Plus Tab > Exclusives > You'll find it there.

So, is it actually, like, an invite-only beta, or is it essentially a demo with a dolled up name? And by 'Public', do you mean everyone, or just PS Plus members?

That's what confused me too. A month or so ago the UK PS Blog were accepting applications for the 'closed', beta, but I never heard anything about it afterwards, so guessed THIS happened instead. Basically, PS Vita users and Plus members can play this week, and everyone else (i.e. non-Plus PS3 owners) can join in from next week. So it's a full open beta now. Despite the fact it's stupidly late and, yes, is essentially just a glorified demo rather than a beta by this point.

The Closed Beta was the European beta. This, as you said, is open for everyone on the 23rd. However, I must point out that all developers misuse the word beta nowadays. Any offline experience is called a demo in advertisements, and any online one is a beta. I'm pretty sure this is because most gamers just call all online demos betas anyway, for some reason. Anyway, I'm digressing now.

Oh right, that makes sense. I hadn't seen anything about the when/if the Closed Beta was actually happening, so I just kind of assumed it never did. But in any case, I'm assuming the closed beta was a 'beta' in every sense of the word, so I just find it odd how 'beta' can also apply to, as you say, online demos. If prerelease online demos masquerading as public betas is a new standard they should probably think of a different word to describe them. But yeah, this is more of a widespread issue in general now so it's not really All-Star's fault.

Am I reading correctly that since I own a Vita (but am not a Plus member) then I still get in the beta today?

I'd rather listen to 'Belouis - Some People' on repeat for all eternity than play 30 minutes of this.

Looks like I'll have to check this out in a week or so.

What? So what happened to the OTHER Beta? I remembered signing up for some Beta in September that never happened. Well, at least everydody will get to try this one... but... ...I kinda wish these things actually were Betas. The game is a month away and probably already finished, so, this is pretty much just the demo everybody was asking for. Highly unlikely it's going to help anything at all beyond testing the server load or whatever.

They have in fact fixed things from the previous closed betas. The one you signed up for was the European Closed Beta, which started and ended already.

Cool, another great perk of being a Plus member
