Players prefer Modern Warfare 3 over Battlefield 3, says Raptr report

According to opinion data from social networking service Raptr, more players were excited about the launch of Battlefield 3, thought that DICE was a more innovative developer than Infinity Ward, and that the Battlefield franchise has had a bigger impact on the FPS genre than Call of Duty. That data comes from a survey of over 6,000 respondents. But when you break down the numbers comparing hours played from Raptr’s user base of over 10 million gamers, it looks like most players prefer Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to Battlefield 3.

The statistics in Raptr’s latest report reveal that Xbox 360 players spent 40% more time playing Modern Warfare 3 on launch day than they did playing Battlefield 3 when it launched. “The battle for dominance for the first-person shooter market in 2011 is clearly in Activision’s favor,” said Raptr CEO Dennis Fong. “EA made a valiant effort evangelizing its fan base and generating massive support around the launch of Battlefield 3. Given how well received the game was, EA has a powerful opportunity to take things further next year, though it’s clear at this point that Call of Duty is a phenomenon that is unrivaled.”

Here are the key findings from Raptr’s report on playtime tracking:
- Xbox 360 players logged 40% more launch-day playtime in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, averaging 6.19 hours compared to 4.45 hours of Battlefield 3
During each game’s first week of launch, Xbox 360 players logged 17% more per-user playtime in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, averaging 20.45 hours compared to 17.37 hours of Battlefield 3
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
accumulated more total hours played in one week post-launch than Battlefield 3 has in three weeks post-launch
- 53% of Battlefield 3 players on Xbox 360 are also playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, compared to just 31% of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players who also played Battlefield 3
During the first week of launch, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 stole more playtime from Battlefield 3 than any other game
- For the first time ever for any franchise, three Call of Duty games were in the top 10 playtime charts on Raptr

Here are the results from the survey:
- 81% of respondents were more excited for the launch of Battlefield 3
92% of respondents consider DICE a more innovative developer than Infinity Ward
- 58% of respondents said the Battlefield franchise has had a bigger impact on the FPS genre
- 80% of respondents feel the Call of Duty franchise generates more hype through its marketing

The survey paints a picture of a showdown between mainstream Hollywood-style blockbuster Modern Warfare 3 – and the more important and innovative Battlefield 3. So you’d think that this would lead to more playtime logged for DICE’s big shooter. The difference between the results of the survey and the hours logged in Raptr’s playtime report could have something to do with the survey itself, which offered respondents a chance to win a high-end custom gaming PC. Since the Call of Duty franchise is now considered by many to be more of a console shooter than Battlefield, the difference between player opinion and actual playtime in the recent Raptr report seems to make more sense. I love this game! Best one yet. My most favorite part is the guns! I found this cool place to find all the guns from the game, check it out Just got my M4 from there and I love it!

This was only under 6,000 participants. 6,000 isn't vast. DICE is certainly an innovator, as Activision is not. In my opinion, COD4 was the last good one they made, then they're carbon copies. I also think COD is quite similar to CSS.

With all the Battlefield 3 talk I expected the average play session for BF3 to be on par if not larger than MW3. While it did say 55% of the people that played Battlefield 3 has played Modern Warfare 3, that's because Modern Warfare is so massive. Battlefield 3 is doing well, but the success will be limited in terms of Call of Duty. Battlefield 3 is not going to reduce COD hold on the FPS marketshare.

I think Modern Warfare is unoriginal and mediocre.

For the first 2 days of launch i struggled to get on the ea servers had i been able to, i certainly would have added more hours to my day of release play!

It takes a lot more time in call of duty to get the same amount of satisfaction you would get out of a little Battlefield.

Comparing Battlefield 3 to Modern Warfare 3 is like comparing Quake and Rainbow Six.
  • FOZ - November 20, 2011 9:39 p.m.

No, no it's not. Have you played Quake?

Guys calm down. Modern Warfare 3 is made with a quick reward system in place where even 8 year olds can be a soldier and call in helicopters, whereas Battlefield is a strategic warfare game, where you truly have to be skilled. THAT is the reason why so many people prefer modern warfare, because one game you can be getting negative kill death, and the next be owning it up. People like jumping into a game for 10 minutes and doing well, whereas a Battlefield game can take half an hour.

"Battlefield is a strategic warfare game, where you truly have to be skilled" That is why Modernfare was waaay better I've played battlefield thinking it was gonna sooo own MW3 but in the end i enjoyed MW3 100 times more than BF3 why? Because games are suppose to be about having fun not that "strategic warfare game advanced pro no life ppl" game and if you want realistic go join the army. Bitch.
  • MakaveliTheDon1 - November 28, 2011 12:27 a.m.

"...more than BF3 why? Because games are suppose to be about having fun not that "strategic warfare game advanced pro no life ppl" So, complaining every second for being killed is what you call fun. When my sister gets onaline all i hear is nuthing but fucking people complaining and bitching about everything, is that what you call fun, it sure doesnt sound like it. Battlefield is wayy better than "modern gayfair" or any call of DUTY game. I dont know why everyone is hating on battlefield especially those who havent played it. I played mofern gayfair and its not fun like you say its the stupidest game ever created.
  • Maxstats69 - November 20, 2011 10:48 a.m.

It's quite simple actually. Hardcore gamers prefer BF3 and casual gamers prefer MW3.
  • inkyspot - November 20, 2011 4:58 a.m.

I have played both games and Battlefield is definately more my cup of tea, but both games have there appeal.
  • TheInvincibleDragon - November 19, 2011 8:27 p.m.

My buddies at work tell me that MW3 is just MW2.5. All I hear is that BF3 is the superior game. I don't play shooters often, but I definitely would not get MW3. Not a fan of CoD at all.
  • Mezolitik - November 19, 2011 2:39 p.m.

If you go by the Amazon reviews, the reason that people spent less time playing BF3 on release day is almost entirely due to EA's Origin software - and the fact that the BF servers were full. Of 348 reviews, 224 were one star, due to Origin being an useless piece of crap. It's absolutely typical for EA to view the PC audience as a farm for data collection. I can't help but think that if somebody else had published BF3, it would've been more successful than CoD.
  • EvilAcid - November 19, 2011 12:24 p.m.

sorry but i would have to disagree with MW3 being the preferred, since BF3 is better in many ways plus i don't want to spend 60$ on another MW2
  • snipes101 - November 19, 2011 1:07 p.m.

How can you argue that it is not preferred? The numbers are there, you can't really deny those. YOU might not prefer it, but the vast majority does. Not to say the vast majority is the be-all-end-all, but it's a cold hard fact: MW3 is preferred.
  • Ex Squid 92 - November 20, 2011 4:43 a.m.

Absolutely right, just remember people are just finding excuses to "be cool" and rag on MW3 to "fit in" and I find it all hysterical since the numbers basically say EVERYBODY bought the game. Reading forum posts you would think NOBODY bought it, Im thinking everyones full of crap.
