Pac-Man survey asks fans to choose new art style

Pac-Man has been updated, scaled down, re-invented and taken back to his arcade roots, but Namco is turning to its fanbase to decide the next style for the haunted pellet gobbler. The Pac-Man Facebook page was updated yesterday with a survey on a new visual direction and potential platforms for a new game in the classic franchise.

The survey's first question asks readers to decide between four motifs for Pac-Man and his ghostly pursuers, ranging from computer-rendered attitude to muted mid-century cartoon tones. The survey also asks where users tend to play the majority of their casual games, if anywhere.

Regardless of interest in another Pac-Man update, which style looks the most appealing?

    D. I want a creepy and dark look at the world of Pacman.

I was originally going to say I liked C best, but B is really growing on me; something about it that just says nostalgia that is unlike almost everything in the games industry. D is pretty charming too - not a direction I'd put Pac-Man in, but I'd be fascinated to see where the series went if they went with that art direction.

Okay, I like D best, however it doesn't look anything like pacman and seems a little too dark. I think that the best choice is B because it still kinda holds true to his classic look, and isn't absolutely awful like A and C.

Looks to me as if they made A first, were about to roll with it, and then made the others just to check opinion. Why? The rest look kinda slapdash. None of the four characters seem to be interacting at all and since they're all looking in different directions it really distracts you from the actual focus. I mean, I quite like B's vector-like style, but it's drawn and composed somewhat awkwardly.

    D. Definitley D To much clutter in the other ones And pack man does not do well in traditional 3d pop

I like the ghosts of B, but D's Pacman. If you could but teh designs from B into D's version, and use D's colour scheme and stuff, I think that'd looks splendid.

B pac man with C ghosts

Gotta be D, it evokes old-school Disney animation and there's nothing quite like in the game industry at the moment. A&C have too much 90's game extremitude, and while B is a bit more SNES-era Nintendo art, D stands out the most by far.

    d is the obvious choice
  • masterjoe123 - October 2, 2012 6:37 p.m.

I like B. D is too dark for a character like Pac-Man, and i just think A and C are unappealing.

My personal favorite is D, that style could really do a lot to break the same-old feel of a new Pac-Man game without taking a more retarded reboot route. For some reason, it reminds me a little bit of Ghost Trick, at least with the sharp, clean lines. Also, "dem ghosts." C is also pretty good, kinda like a lighter version of D. Could work as well as D, but less dark. B is just a little too Saturday morning cartoon-ish for my taste, and A just looks like bland 90s mass-produced CGI crap.

    d> none of the above.
  • Sinosaur - October 2, 2012 5:14 p.m.

Why are there only three ghosts? Also, all of them but A might work out alright, but C & D edge out B
  • Risonhighmer - October 2, 2012 4:48 p.m.

D for sure. I love how lanky he is and how the ghosts are actually a touch on the scary side. They could do some cool stuff with making them look scared and vulnerable within that style.

Pish to the lot of them. I haven't got any time for anyone who hasn't got the balls to decide upon their own visual style and who turns to crowd-gunk namby-pamby pander, market-researched cookie-cutter non-stick gash. Lazy. Have some vision.

    B or D
  • taokaka - October 2, 2012 3:41 p.m.

I'd probably go with C for clyde, who for some strange reason is miising.
  • alexfruen - October 2, 2012 3:02 p.m.

B suits the style more than the others, its reminiscent of the old graphics from the arcade cabinets, The others just dont look like, or remind me of pacman. 3D doesnt suit it all all, C looks too much like sonic or anime and D is just freaky.
  • J-Fid - October 2, 2012 2:55 p.m.

    I like D. It's different, but I like it.
