No new Assassin’s Creed titles till 2012 or 2013

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is still on schedule to release on Nov 16, 2010 in North America and Nov 19, 2010 in the UK. But if the series’ associate producer Jean-Francois Boivin has his way, you won’t be seeing a new Assassin’s Creed game anytime soon after that.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Boivin cites the saturation of sequels for music games as a reason to give the series a breather. “We can see a lot of the music games that are releasing year after year – the interest is a lot less than it used to be. You want to keep people excited. You gotta make people miss it a bit. It’s like, ‘Oh man! I’m so happy it’s back!’ But if you keep force-feeding to people then people are like, ‘Yeah, enough of your Assassin’s Creed,’ says Boivin.

Above: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will be releasing this November. But Boivin wants the series to take a 'breather' after that

"If we skip a year, I think we're good. But yeah, I think we could do something really true to the license if we skip a year and release it in 2012 or 2013. We need to keep it fresh though; we need to keep it relatively close by, because we have to keep the interest there. I don't think we do a service to this license if we pull a Duke Nukem on people, you know what I'm saying? It's hard to answer."

We like the way Boivin thinks and like the idea of giving the series some time to ‘breath’ so that the next time a new Assassin’s Creed title is announced, it really means something. That being said, the decision is not completely up to Boivin alone.

“Bottom line, it’s not for me to say. We have some business people that will eventually put a date and say ‘This needs to come out.’ We have our creative people, who are also pushing on their end, saying ‘We need this much time to do something new and refreshing, just scope wise.’ So I don’t know how much time we’ll need,” explains Boivin.

*potential spoiler* according to the game lore, that'll be too late

it could be either good or bad if they wait. the longer they wait to release it the better the game play will be. but if they wait to long then people will start to loose interest in the game. i sure dont want to wait to long for the next one to come out. i dont think anyone does.

It kinda worries me that this might mean AC3 might only be out for the PS4/Xbox720. Hope not though.

I've loved the series from the start, and wouldn't hesitate to buy the next installment if it released tomorrow. But it's good to see that they care more about quality than about pushing a title out every year just for the money. I'm always satisfied with the amount of time and effort Ubisoft puts into their games.

Cant wait for brotherhood and I hope if they wait that long to put out 3 they had better make it worth the wait

I'm more glad than let down with the decision. I have always been a huge fan of the series, but letting it take a breather is a smart idea to keep the games fresh and alive.

its good someone understands that sometimes delaying for a couple of years makes the game more special.

The first and second one's fun, and no doubt will 'Brotherhood' also be... but after that, i think a 'Far Cry 3' would be nice. :)

It's totally understandable; if there were mainline Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Halo, Gears, GoW and Uncharted every 5-6 months, we'd all be dead tired of them. Although in terms of music/rhythm games, there should be another Elite Beat Agents/ Ouendan with better songs. That was a great DS game series that seems to have ended in 2007-8. Bring that back instead of the countless guitar peripheral stuff and the genre is golden.

Awesome, developers definitley should be taking time to properly develop their product. It's nearly always a better decision, look at Metal Gear Solid for a perfect example of why longer development time massively improves the quality of the gameplay. Still, long wait for AC3 makes this gamer sad..

nice to see they want to take time on the game, but wont the world end by then?
  • FriendlyFire - July 8, 2010 8:55 p.m.

At least they aren't all Kotick clones. Thank god.
  • OriginalJonty - July 8, 2010 8:51 p.m.

Good news. More titles should take breathers. I'm looking at you CoD...
  • nighthawk205 - July 8, 2010 8:40 p.m.

Ahhhh! So sad :( It is nice to know though that they're willing to take some time to put more quality into the franchise instead of pumping out endless sequels and making it stale.

    I bet #3's coming out in 2011.
