NFL Blitz returns early next year from EA Sports

For nerds that enjoyed power bombing other players instead of obeying onside kick rules, NFL Blitz was the football game through most of the 90s, whether on home consoles or arcade. Then came the dark times, when EA got exclusive rights to make NFL games, leaving Blitz publisher Midway out in the cold, despite trying to rebrand it with new M-rated style and extra Lawrence Taylor. But happy days are here again, as EA picked up Midway’s fumble by announcing a new NFL Blitz that will arrive as early as January 2012.

Revealed via EGM, EA surprised many with this series reboot, though after successfully bringing back NBA Jam, Blitz seems like a logical follow-up. Early footage showed off the game’s 30-yard first down and two minute long quarters, with late hits all over the place. NBA Jam commentator Tim Kitzrow is on hand for the play-by-play, and for those missing the irreverence of EA’s Mutant League titles along with Blitz’s sillier elements, zombies, Bigfoots, and robot teams are around to play against all the standard NFL teams.

It’s being developed by Madden team Tiburon and is planned for a retail release January 3, 2012. No specific consoles were mentioned, but we feel pretty safe in guessing the title will come to PS3 and 360.

And if NHL Hitz comes back, I WANT MY MLB SLUGFEST 20-12 with Tim Kitzrom and Jim Shorts on commentary.

I'm honestly not too excited. I loved both Blitz: The League games and actually enjoyed the fictitious League and backstory behind all the teams and players. It's really kind of sad to see it go. Plus, I really dislike this new style, and the fact that it's being developed by the Madden team doesn't really grab me either, as that series has gotten really stale over the last few years. However, on the plus side, maybe this could lead to a revival of the Mutant League games, a series which I still enjoy and play on my old Genesis to this day. I am actually surprised it hasn't seen a resurrection of any kind yet.

This is a revival of a series from the 90's, it has nothing to do with blitz the league.

A new Blitz should be awesome, but given that it's being developed by the company that gave Blitz a reason to exist in the first place I'm a teensy bit skeptical that it can carry the same spirit as the old games. Time will tell, though, and I'll surely give it a try.

Yeah I liked the two Blitz: The League titles recently. I thought they were pretty awesome.

I'm probably the only person on earth that feels this way, but I was a huge fan of Blitz the League. While I'd rather have The League 3, any new Blitz is better than no new Blitz.

Well, I guess it's a touch towards MLF. Also, sad that the old reboot's going away. Kinda liked the idea of Blitz: The League.

If Blitz is on the way please oh please let there be an NHL Hitz.

100% agreed. If they do bring back Hitz, they need to go back to the 3-on-3 of 20-02 and 20-03. 5-on-5 with Hitz Pro just wasn't the same.
