New TV project from guys behind Star Trek movie

Variety is reporting that JJ Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (the gang behind the forthcoming Star Trek movie) have been given the go ahead – and more than 10 million dollars – to produce a pilot for Fox based on an idea they pitched called Fringe. It will combine elements of The X-Files and Altered States into what Abrams has reportedly called "a slight Twilight Zone vibe." It will focus on a bonkers research scientist, his son, and a female FBI agent. Episodes will be self-contained and focussed on the paranormal, although it sounds like it has a medical-mystery angle too (the lead character being described as "Frankenstein mixed with Albert Einstein").
