New 'Flame Red' 3DS hitting US stores September 9

Perhaps you’ve been down on the 3DS so far, uninterested in purchasing it. The launch line-up wasn’t great, the price was a little high, and as nice as Ocarina of Time is, you’d prefer something new. If the imminent price cut to $169.99 still isn’t doing it for you, Nintendo is going with a reliable strategy, one that’s worked on Game Boy, GameCube, GBA, DS, and Wii before it: a brand new color!!! Starting September 9 Nintendo will be selling Flame Red 3DS models in US stores.

Japan got this model, known as Flare Red there, in July to coincide with the release of Star Fox 64 3D, and that’s the same thing Nintendo is doing here, as Star Fox also hits US shelves September 9. It’s always nice to see the US get a color variation that’s available in Japan, though it burns us a little this wasn’t available at launch, as we’d love to trade our blue 3DS for that fiery red frame. Is this new coat of paint enough to sell you on the system, or are you holding out for the eventual pink version?

Above: Nintendo provided its own light news piece about the price drop. Enjoy the info-tainment!

It looks violet, just like blue looks turquoise. DAMN IT, NINTENDO.

The only time Nintendo's variations of handheld color schemes caught my eye was when they made the GB Color and GB Advance a transparent (or "see-through" for you kiddies).

Damn it, you think they would have done it sooner. If it was the orange one I would wait, but the red just isn't enough, so when August 12th is upon us I will just get the cosmo black

@510BrotherPanda Thats funny I thought the exact same thing. Why is it that when I picture the 3DS in my head I only see blue and red? Well, chalk that up to their terrible marketing. On another note is anyone actually going to buy this thing now because it's in red?? Call me when they improve battery life or have a game that isn't an N64 remake.

"NEW"? I thought this was one of the colors they showed when the 3DS was announced? Buncha crap... The 3D screen's flicker still bugs me a lot, so I'm still not sold on this stuff. I hope it doesn't die nearly as fast as the Virtual Boy, though...It's only been half a year or so...

The one I wanted but still waitin for more new games. also....that name is gay..really.
  • shawksta - August 10, 2011 10 p.m.

I love my blue one, my brother wants a red one for his own though. @Treytable Theres more than ports you know, While SSF4 is a port, itts suprising how well it is on 3ds, its a conveniant pocket version. Ocarina of time 3D is a REMAKE, MUCH different than a port, its not the fully same as the original, and has its own new additions.
  • knightnettie - August 10, 2011 9:59 p.m.

Drat, I was hoping by the time a red model came out, there would be a couple decent games for it...oh well, I can wait a little bit longer, I guess.

I usually don't like red but this one looks nice.
  • EvidentDead - August 10, 2011 9:31 p.m.

I was all ready to get a 3DS on Friday for the price drop. Now I have to wait again, just so I can get one that doesn't look like Crayola made it.
  • therawski - August 10, 2011 9:28 p.m.

    Virtual Boy!
  • TreyTable - August 10, 2011 9:24 p.m.

I'm waiting for the green one. Or at least the one with more than three good games that aren't ports of games I already own.
  • TheKey - August 10, 2011 9:13 p.m.

This might sell like hotcakes, or not at all. Though I do like my blue one. *snuggles it affectionately*
  • D0CCON - August 10, 2011 9:11 p.m.

If I ever get one, it will be black anyways (although I am fine with a darker blue like the DS Phat had). One day, I'd love to see one that is light purple and see through, mainly since that was the color of my GBC, AKA my first gaming device ever.
  • Linktoreality - August 10, 2011 9:06 p.m.

I do wish my blue 3DS was actually blue and not some weird teal-turquoise thing, but I'm cool with it. If I wanted something stereotypically cool, I woulda gone with the black version.
  • Zepaw - August 10, 2011 9:02 p.m.

I love the "Aqua blue" model best but this is a cool option.
