Metroid: Other M footage taken straight from SNES classic

Opening cinema directly references Super Metroid's tragic end

Earlier this year I was able to spend about 90 minutes with Metroid: Other M, and even though my initial impressions weren't overwhelmingly positive, the game's stunning opening really did speak to me as a longtime SNES and Super Metroid fan. For whatever reason, that opening has now appeared on YouTube, complete with images from the climactic end of Super Metroid.

Above: A great mashup of old and new

In case you're unfamiliar with the context, this all comes from the final moments of Super Metroid, where Samus attempts toconfront Mother Brain and is sorely outmatched. Just before the killing blow, the baby Metroid Samus saved at the end of Metroid II swoops in and saves the day. The baby ends up dying in battle, but infuses Samus with new strength and a powerful Hyper Beam that enables her to obliterate Mother Brain for good.

This is a bold reference to make, as Super Metroid has repeatedly been hailed as one of, and occasionally THE best game of all time. To directly connect such a universally loved game to a 2010 sequel means Nintendo and devs Team Ninja think this is going to be a worthy follow-up... or they want as many people interested as possible and purposely tied Other M to the SNES' finest moment.

We'll undoubtedly have an updated take on Other M after E3 2010 (June 15-17), and you'll know firsthand when it releases on August 31.

Anyone else think that Motherbrain will give the thousands of kids nightmares? Damn, even I was a bit creeped at the sight of that thing

I'm still very unsure about the actual gameplay. I wish they would release more gameplay videos.

Just reminded me how atmospheric Super Metroid was, and how powerful that end sequence could be with NO voice acting and ONLY 2D sprites to tell the story. If Other M can capture that magic (and it looks like it's well on its way) I'd get a Wii just to have it.

I'd say Ocarina of Time is the best game of all time, although Super Metroid is pretty cool.

I've been getting more of an optimistic vibe about this game as more details are revealed. But if Brett is right, and Big N and Team Ninja are trying to make it as famous and spectacular as Super Metroid, they are both going to be disappointed. I don't care if this game turns out to be great, any decent developer can do a better job than Team Ninja. Anyone. Having beat all the Metroid games (besides 2, don't worry it's coming in the mail this week), Super Metroid is the best, only rivaled by Prime 3. Realistically speaking, Other M might beat Metroid 1 (the least greatest), and that's if Nintendo kept Team Ninja on a tight leash if you know what I mean.

the opening looks great, but cutscenes usually do. The gameplay still looked very "meh" to me. im just gonna sit tight and wait for a new 2-d metroid for DS.

I enjoyed Super Metriod, but I never called myself a Metroid fan until I got the Trilogy on Wii. I'm trying to finish up the third one before I get Galaxy 2 in a couple days. Other M looks like it will be great though, I'm fairly certain I will get it.
