Earlier this year I was able to spend about 90 minutes with Metroid: Other M, and even though my initial impressions weren't overwhelmingly positive, the game's stunning opening really did speak to me as a longtime SNES and Super Metroid fan. For whatever reason, that opening has now appeared on YouTube, complete with images from the climactic end of Super Metroid.
Above: A great mashup of old and new
In case you're unfamiliar with the context, this all comes from the final moments of Super Metroid, where Samus attempts toconfront Mother Brain and is sorely outmatched. Just before the killing blow, the baby Metroid Samus saved at the end of Metroid II swoops in and saves the day. The baby ends up dying in battle, but infuses Samus with new strength and a powerful Hyper Beam that enables her to obliterate Mother Brain for good.
This is a bold reference to make, as Super Metroid has repeatedly been hailed as one of, and occasionally THE best game of all time. To directly connect such a universally loved game to a 2010 sequel means Nintendo and devs Team Ninja think this is going to be a worthy follow-up... or they want as many people interested as possible and purposely tied Other M to the SNES' finest moment.
We'll undoubtedly have an updated take on Other M after E3 2010 (June 15-17), and you'll know firsthand when it releases on August 31.
