Mass Effect 2 on PS3 uses the Mass Effect 3 engine. We soil our space pantaloons

Stupid BioWare. PS3 fans were already mega excited about Mass Effect 2 coming to Sony’s console, and now you’ve got to go and angry up their blood (in the best possible way) by announcing the game will actually use Mass Effect 3’s engine. Space pantaloons don’t come cheap, you know.

Above: Mass Effect 3's DNA will seep through every pore of its PlayStation predecessor... probably

During a recent BioWare podcast, Jesse Houston (who is producer on the PS3 version of Shepard’s sequel) admitted: “We’ve actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content and the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put them in the Mass Effect 3 engine. And that‘s what we are actually delivering.”

Exciting stuff. This may well mean the PS3 port will look considerably better than the 360 original, while also giving us a pretty good idea of what the third game will look like. Of course, 360 players can still take solace in the fact they got to enjoy the epic space opera a full year before PS3 owners.

The PS3 version will also have an interactive back story comic (catchy!) made by Dark Horse, which will fill in Mass Effect virgins on all the alien-sexing shenanigans of the first game.

And just in case you need a refresher on how damn epic Mass Effect 3 is looking, here’s the debut trailer again. Set your eye holes for stunned…

I've beaten it enough times to not bother with a prettier version. Nice to see though.

I don't think they'll go through the effort to really make it look better than the Xbox version, they are probably just future proofing themselves.

That's pretty awesome. @StrayGator: My question is, if Shepherd and crew are still featured at all in ME3, would Bioware even need to import the models/textures from ME2? If ME3 extends through the galaxy, like 2 did, then it's possible that the textures are already there and only the dialogue, mechanics, and storyline are all the essentials that are needed to be carried over. Either way, I look forward to seeing how it'll look on the PS3. I favour Bioware games on the PC since that's how I've played them since Baldur's Gate days, but it's fun to see how they look on the consoles, too.

That's great, like you said the PS3 users get shinny graphics and the rest of us can see how the third game will look. Plus they still have time to polish the game so it'll only look as worse as it does on the PS3. Oh ok that came out wrong lol. Damn that comic picture is sexy, saved. Weird though, that's the beginning of the second game if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks a lot BioWare, now I HAVE to get it for the PS Triple even though I've already beaten the 360 and PC ones twice. I'm going to be broke by the end of March next year.

Wonder if this bodes well for the PS3 version fo ME 3 alteast being equal on PS3 compared to 360.

    This news pleases me.

I only have a PS3, and this is the only game I care about during the holiday season.

    StrayGator stole my comment.

    1. so ME3 won't use the unreal engine? umm, yay? 2. If they are using the original's assets untouched, the game will look pretty much the same. framerate, stability and loading times might be different, but screenshots should be identical. Compare Half-Life: Source to the original HL for example. only possible difference is if they bump the resolution, which I highly doubt. Captcha: sisfack enabled. wtf?

not only do they get the new engine, but they get all the dlc free! stupid Bioware- if your primary console is xbox and pc why give extra perks to the latecomers?
  • Nodoudt - December 16, 2010 4:59 p.m.

FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU- We would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling PS3 owners. >:C
  • Howetzer - December 16, 2010 4:58 p.m.

    Thanks!
  • Bloodstorm - December 16, 2010 4:54 p.m.

I can wait till next year for the ME3 engine, otherwise its the same game. Enjoy my PS3 owning brothers, this game is awesome.
  • garPOW - December 16, 2010 4:29 p.m.

You may get Mass Effect 2, but you don't get to continue your awesome First story, will the tidbits from your first play through. SO no one is gets what they want. haHA
  • AlmightyFuzz - December 16, 2010 4:21 p.m.

@AdonisX82 If I remember correctly, the interactive comic goes through the story of the previous game and also gives the player the ability to make some of the choices that get carried over to second game.
  • NeelEvil - December 16, 2010 4:04 p.m.

@ AonisX82- Mass Effect was published my Microsoft so there's no chance of it being released on the PS3.
  • F1101011 - December 16, 2010 3:59 p.m.

They should release the actual 1st mass effect anyways, I'd buy that for a dollar.
  • AdonisX82 - December 16, 2010 3:48 p.m.

Is it just me, or does it seem stupid to be bringing the second game of what is a) apparently a really amazing franchise and b) a franchise that is very much story driven, to the PS3, but not the first game? I've heard nothing but great things about the Mass Effect series, and as such should be like "oh man, I'm totally going to get that." But I'll be lost as to what's going on, and isn't part of what makes this game so good is that it uses save data from the first game to alter the experience of the second game accordingly? If they brought both games to PS3 I'd be all over that. But just the second... Nice idea thoug doing it with a new engine.
