The Last of Us multiplayer confirmed

The Last of Us will star at least A Few of Us, as Naughty Dog has confirmed the PlayStation 3 exclusive will feature a multiplayer mode. The PlayStation blog post from Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer disclosed few details about the mode aside from those which can be gleaned from its other reveal: pre-order bonuses.

Naughty Dog isn't ready to dish on the multiplayer yet, but it is ready to start selling it: the GameStop-exclusive Survival Pack provides bonus experience points, a melee attack booster, extra starting cash, and customizable character items for the multiplayer mode. Given the talk of experience points, boosters, and cash, it sounds like the multiplayer will take several cues from Uncharted 3, at least in terms of higher-level systems.

Meanwhile, GameStop and non-GameStop pre-orderers alike will receive the Sights and Sounds Pack, which comes with The Last of Us' official soundtrack, a dynamic theme, and PlayStation Network avatars of main characters Joel and Ellie.

The Last of Us will release on May 7, 2013.

Oh well, more stuff to play with sounds fine to me. If the single player is fairly close to being as good as we've been hyped up to believe I'm sure the mp won't be anything but extra playtime.

This game could have been a massive hit had they been smart about it and released it for PC too. I am sure it will be a big hit on the PS3. But many of us are not console players. Had they done a PC version, their sales would have easily been quadrupled. Too bad.. As evidence, look at the Fallout series. Most, if not all, Fallout series followers would have snagged this game up. Another group that follows the 'Walking Dead' series could have potentially been another major purchasing group.. and with backing like that, they could have taken this series well into the future..

The studio and game are respectively owned and published by Sony.

Most sales on PC games seem to come from Steam and Steam takes a cut. Putting it on the PC makes it more available to pirate, and despite what people claim, whenever more anti-pirate ware is added they complain that it's too intrusive. If PC players want more console exclusives maybe they should stop sending so many mixed messages.
  • KnowYourPokemon - December 11, 2012 8:58 a.m.

Yeah, cause no one pirates for consoles. Not to justify piracy but if someone can pirate a game and not have to put up with the DRM that people who actually paid have to deal with than it's easy to see why. I'd really like to see the console reaction if they made you have an account for each game, download different systems within systems to play (looking at you UPlay), and constantly be online to play.

Quadrupled my ass, PC ports of console games never sell nearly as much as the console versions. Just check and see for yourself. For example the best selling Call of Duty (which id like to point out happens to the best selling and most popular franchise whether you like the series or not) title to date is Modern Warfare 3 with 14.74 Mil. copies sold on the 360 and 12.58 Mil. copies on the PS3, comapre that with its grand total of 1.56 Mil. copies on PC and you have strong evidence to suggest the opposite of your claim will occur. If you're going to argue for something at least get your facts straight.
  • obviouslyadouche - December 10, 2012 2:21 p.m.

Thats partially because Call of duty is a console shooter and is awful on pc. PC also has a bunch of better shooters, including F2p ones.

I would pick this up in a heart beat if it were on PC, but God forbid a Naughty Dog game is on anything except the PS3. Even if it is owned by Sony I just don't get it. Then again, exclusives are probably my most hated aspect about the gaming industry right now, and hope some time in my life time they are abolished.

It should not be traditional deathmatch, but a survival, horde like mode, where the team of three or four try to survive the zombie creatures.
  • jackthemenace - December 10, 2012 11:46 a.m.

Sounds about right- or maybe something akin to co-op missions? like, instead of just fighting off waves and surviving, you've got small, levels with objectives and stuff to fight through? Honestly, Something like co-op stuff sounds great, and even if it's deathmatch-y stuff- which WOULD be retarded- we don't have to play it. As long as the stroy doesn't suffer because of the online, and we're not missing out on anything because we're not playing the multiplayer, I'm fine with it.

More than the announcement of a shitty tacked on multiplayer, I'm more interested on seeing the VGA trailer, Y U guys no post that yet??
  • ultimatepunchrod - December 10, 2012 11:48 a.m.

Well, it is Naughty Dog, and Uncharted's multiplayer was pretty awesome. Not the best multiplayer ever, but a good addition to an already great game. MP won't be the focus on the Last of Us, but it wasn't on Uncharted either, and it still turned out pretty good.
  • awesomesauce - December 10, 2012 2:31 p.m.

More content is definitely a good thing, plus as PunchRod it's by NaughtyDog so it can't be bad. how can you jugde it before it's even created yet?
  • BladedFalcon - December 10, 2012 4:17 p.m.

Because regardless of whether it's actually good or not, a setting such as the one of The Last of Us doesn't really scream "Multiplayer potential!" to me. It's a post apocalyptic story in which you are the shepard of a single girl trying to survive. It's not a war game, it's not even an action adventure like uncharted where the theme lends more naturaly to a multiplayer experience. Also, there's the fact that I simply don't like multiplayer. and notice that really, my main complaint from my post is that GR decided to focus on that instead of showing a new trailer with significantly more exciting things concerning the game and story.
  • Ronnie-_- - December 11, 2012 10:20 a.m.

The trailer was being held by Sony for a couple days after the VGAs, as were all trailers, no game journalism site was able to post the trailer until today.
  • BladedFalcon - December 11, 2012 11:46 a.m.

Then how come I was able to watch the trailer on IGN on SUNDAY night, hm? I mean, I mentioned it not because I actually hadn't watched the trailer, but because I tend to prefer this site, and comment on things here, but it's been two days, and GR has taken it's sweet fucking time delivering the goods. It's also been a while since they revealed the new and sweet Lords of Shadow 2 trailer, but has has GR bothered to get a move on, NOPE But multiplayer announcement even if you have no details for it hence being useless info THEY ARE ALL OVER THAT SHIT.
