The Last of Us: four-issue Dark Horse comic series and deluxe art book announced

Dark Horse comics has announced The Last of Us: American Dreams, a four-issue series penned by The Last of Us lead writer, Neil Druckmann. The comics will be a prequel to developer Naughty Dog’s intriguing PS3 action-survivor, and will focus on young Ellie’s backstory leading up to the events of the game.

Dark Horse’s The Last of Us: American Dreams blurb reveals more:

“Ellie, the heroine of The Last of Us, has grown up in a postpandemic world, shuttled between military orphanages in one of the last remaining quarantine zones and resigned to the fact that when she’s old enough, she’ll be channeled into the army or left to fend for herself—until she meets an older girl determined to find a third way out. American Dreams explores Ellie’s backstory and her first steps on the road that led her to her companion Joel.”

The first issue of The Last of Us: American Dreams is scheduled for spring 2013.

Also announced is a deluxe ‘The Art of the Last of Us’ hardback, which will catalogue the game’s art, including its characters, infected, and environments. According to Dark Horse, The Art of the Last of Us will ‘launch in conjunction with the release of the game’.

The Last of Us is currently scheduled for a Q1/Q2 2013 on PS3.

Awesome; if the comic and the art book are releasing the same time as the game, I sure hope they bundle it all together in some sort of special edition. I've never been a special edition sort of person, but I would pay good money for this. Makes sense when the comic is a prequel too, in case you want to read it 'fore you actually play the game.

Agreed, but I doubt it'll happen, what with it being a digital download. Or have I got that wrong? Still, if it is being released on PSN, then it'd have to be a digital download of the comics, which'd be bugger, since the physical comic that came with the pre-orders of RAGE was definitely one of the coolest thing about the game itself. Either way, I'll be picking this up if I can afford to.

Oh, yeah, good point. I guess the comic could wind up on PSN, in which case they could stick a code in the special edition's box (or maybe even offer the first issue free for everyone or something to garner interest). But since the artbook is quite definitely a hardback, I just assumed the comic was also physical. At least, I hope it is. But yeah, I'm kinda assuming the artbook is gonna cost about the same as the actual game, so my wallet's already weeping.

No, I mean, isn't teh GAME a digital download? I imagine that the comic is a physical copy, but I was under the impression that the game was only being released through PSN.

Whoops, sorry, didn't realise you meant the actual game itself! Pretty sure it's coming on disc. I mean, this IS a massive big-budget AAA Naughty Dog game after all (with punch-lasers!) I'd be extremely surprised if it was PSN-only, if only 'cos it'd be like fifty quid by PSN pricing standards and I am not paying that. However, don't worry, because there still will be a fifty quid PSN version eventually if that's more your thing, lawls.
