Lara Croft looks miserable in new Tomb Raider screens

New screens from Crystal Dynamics’ reboot of the Tomb Raider series have arrived and Lara Croft never looked so miserable. She’s muddy, bloody, and covered in filth. In other words, she looks amazing. The detailed screenshots look mighty promising. Have a look at the latest batch of images below.

These images were also recently posted on Game Informer’s website. But here they are again in case you missed them.

Christina Aguilera should market this game. Lol diiiirtty. Well tell me when you've got footage of the game in motion. Screens look good but that one with Lara falling and hitting the ground could be the game over screen lol.

This looks like it could finally live up to the originals. And it's good to see Crystal Dynamic back at in. Next, they need to start working on a new Gex!

What we know so far is: Lara almost dies and/or gets raped in a muddy cave. She also looks different now. And she keeps getting beaten in every way possible, while bleeding to death as she holds on to another piece of rock in the mountains.

I already made this joke in the forums, but it looks like she's covered in poop, so I'm guessing co-op mode will feature one cup.

Looks like they're taking alot of inspiration from The Descent in these screens, I totally approve!

This has really caught me attention. It look like they've made it a lot more realistic, except for the black-magic voo-doo looking themes (which is more than fine by me). I'm also rather interested by the fact that Lara looks a lot less sexualized (spelling-Nazi disclaimer: I know that's not a real word). Reminds me of Beyond Good & Evil, the rare, non-sexed up female lead. Not that it will make a difference to the gameplay, but it's a step in a nice, refreshing direction in terms of women in games.

    Looks like a SAW movie

I'm liking the new Lara. I remember playing the first two games, wondering how she stayed so clean and how the heck she was able to run with those double-F's on her chest and not having to stop to rub her aching back afterwards. I just hope she's not always that gritty, dirty, and painful looking in the new Tomb Raider. Maybe there'll be an option to clean up at underground streams and so forth.

@garfunkling: I think you mean The Descent. Although it is decent.

Is it just me or has this got "Japanese Old Pervert" written all over it? No offence meant to anyone from Japan by the way. looks a little too much like bondage to me...

@FriendlyFire 'Balance is everything' Precisely. This reminds me of the transformation of the Prince of Persia between The Sands of Time and Warrior Within, they have gone way too far in the other direction. The game mechanics underneath were still good but the idiotic 'ooh I'm soooo tough and I swear and love heavy metal and boobies' prince totally ruined it for me

3rd pic down (hanging upside-down) reminds me of Limbo when you're trapped in the Spider's web. If the devs make it anywhere near as atmospheric as that game, I'm in.

Haters gonna hate. It has to be said. At the end of the day, this is nothing but an improvement. Whether it looks like Uncharted, or too dirty, or whatever, who cares. It's gritty, and it's at least kind of working so far. Which is more than can be said for the last decade of Lara Croft.yedrist

Im sure its been said but this really reminds me of the Decent. That horror movie awhile back. That is in no way a bad thing.

I feel something has to be said for the nay sayers. Namely the ones all for Lara's dated hooters look. You must realize that the game industry is changing at a rapid pace. Keeping Lara's old look would look just that; she would look old and dated. I for one applaud the developers new approach to Lara. lastly to all who suggest Lara was merely her large cup size never played the Tomb Raider series. Lara was far more then a mere pin up playing tomb raider. Lara culminated everything that was stereotypical to a woman in video games and stuck a 45 in it's mouth. She paved the way for characters like Alyx in HL2, or even the ability to play a female in game at all. So really, back off the developers, they're not selling out to the look of Uncharted; they are just finally making Lara relevant to todays standards.

I am inevitably remminded of Uncharted, meaning Nate`s look.
  • theintellectual - January 12, 2011 6:19 a.m.

yeah when you to traipsing off into the middle of nowhere by yourself and get yourself involved in fighting in dank dirty caves facing unimaginable threats, then you are going to get VERY dirty and you are going to get hurt, with little or no time to attempt even basic hygiene.
  • AngryAmoeba - January 12, 2011 5:58 a.m.

tomb raiding is dirty business. you don't want blood and dirt, don't raid tombs.
