God of War's 16 goriest moments

God of War III is almost here. Bigger, better and more brutal than ever before. But just how brutal is that? We've revisited the first two games to see how gory Kratos' adventures have been so far. And you know what? They're nasty.

So here are the most violent moments from the series so far. Be warned, they may not have the HD gore of the new game, but they're still the bits that made the original games 18-rated, so minors should probably click away now.

Harpy Wing Rip

Right near the start of the first game, you get set upon by a load of Harpies who fly around you causing no end of mischief. With a simple press of Circle, Kratos plucks them from the air, gets a good foothold... and pulls their wings off.

Above: Reckon Kratos used to pull the wings off butterflies as a kid?

A problem halved

When you're as strong as Kratos, there's no need to finish your enemies off with weapons. Why not tear them in half with your bare hands? Too many games characters are lacking this kind of showmanship.

Above: If we did this to someone in real life, we'd shout 'rah' at the end too

Minotaur Throat Stab

Not only is this one of the most gruesome attacks in the game, it has a purpose too, yielding health when you execute it. So really you've got no excuse for not doing it every time.

Above: Come on, don't gargle your own blood. It's disgusting

Flame-grilled prisoner

Kratos shows no mercy as he's faced with a complex door mechanism that requires him to place this cage in a certain spot and pull a lever. The lever fries whatever's in the way, so the fact there's a prisoner inside the cage makes this a complex moral dilemma. Fortunately Kratos can't even spell 'moral dilemma' so he's happy to do the deed.

Above: OK, so you're in pain, but have you seen how cool you look?

I'm surprised the Hydra wasn't in here.

whenever I am talking to someone who hasn't played GoW and I'm explaining how violent it can be, I often find myself mentioning the poor souls that get their arms ripped off to be killed by said arm. An excellent choice and by far my favorite from the series

Ahhh...I can only imagine what it will be like to finally kill Zeus. It's like waiting to see how The Bride would finally kill Bill.

Smashing that one guy's head in the treasure chest in Chains of Olympus is pretty disturbing...

What about when Kratos impales the hydra through THE EYE with a HUGE sharp stick! I know, that scene has been played out but when I got GOW on day one and played that? I almost shart, crapped, and came in my pants from multiple nerd/blood/violencegasms at once!!!!! @ThatsWhatSheSaid: Amen, shark-man. How the heck will they top that? Maybe biting off Zeus' eyeballs and spitting them down his throat?

THE PANTS WERE DEAD. Loved the Full Life Consequences reference!
  • slapdatass - March 5, 2010 2:15 a.m.

The horsekeeper was Theseus. Don't think Ariadne would be so into him after Kratos had been round...

  • Embolado - March 4, 2010 11:48 p.m.

What about the kill from Chains of Olympus when he smashes that one guys head into the treasure chest and keeps slamming the lid on his head until he is dead
  • crumbdunky - March 4, 2010 11:27 p.m.

So many memories, so much blood! Kratos is , surely, the single angriest MoFo in games full stop! Whatever, GOW3 is nearly upon us and I'm well set for some ancient Greek choppy, choppy to follow the futurism of ME2 and gritty modernism of Heavy Rain. Great year to be a gamer and a year bordering on too much if you game on more than the one platform and a little GOW history lesson is just the ticket for getting us in the mood for what looks to be one of the best returns this generation.
