First Alice: Madness Returns gameplay trailer exposes Wonderland's nightmares, massacres them

The first Alice: Madness Returns gameplay footage has debuted in a new trailer, and McGee's latest take on the emaciated dress-wearing maniac looks, as expected, to be part bloody brawler and part macabre puzzler, with especially lovely (vile) environment and character designs. Check it out below:

We also grabbed a bunch of stills from the video to see if we could glean anything interesting. It's all interesting, if you ask the excited fanboy writing this article, but try to bear with his uncurbed enthusiasm. He's weird.

Above: London hasn't treated Alice very well. Eat a sandwich!

Above: But look! She's back in lovely Wonderland, in the official garb of psychological regression

Above: Oh right, it's only lovely for long enough to provide contrast

Above: The physics applied to Alice's hair and dress look fantastic. Also note the costume change... good, we were sort of getting tired of blue and white

Above: The combat appears to be a bit more involved than it was in the previous game - looks like Alice has a hefty collection of special attacks and combos

Above: By "special attacks," we meant "Oh God, the horror!" Is her heart bleeding?

Above: But melee attacks aren't Alice's only skill - she's going all Duke Nukem on a couple of horrid dolls

Above: Alice has become awfully acrobatic since we last saw her

Above: Is this a remote-controlled bomb? Is Alice holding the detonator? But it's holding a clock? Questions!

Above: Do not want!

Above: NO! Wait... are we back in London?

Above: Arm arms put on arms?

Above: Looks like we'll be glimpsing reality... or perhaps just another mental abstraction of it. If this and the rat above are any indication, it's worse than Wonderland

Above: It wouldn't be Alice without an appearance from this guy

words cannot express how insanely excited I am about this game, it's absolutely amazing

So the Cheshire Cat is going to be voiced by the same guy who voiced the Cat in the first Alice game? If so, then I will be sooooo happy. I loved that voice.

@GamesRadarTylerWilde Maybe this is just me but if it continues the plot 11 years later shouldn't Alice look a little older than she does? Glad to finally some gameplay footage I was almost afraid it was going to play out the same way the first game did.

Whoa, this game looks fucking awesome. I gotta check it out when it releases for sure. I've never played the first one though, so I hope this one gives some backstory info.

@The_Tingler Yeah, I was just making a lame joke. I herd you like arms. @jackthemenace Don't believe it is.

Tyler: Note that the voice at the end is the same guy who did the Cheshire Cat in American McGee's Alice - and was f**king excellent, so great news! Also, the "Arm arms put on arms?" pic is of the Mad Hatter - http://spyhunter007.com/Images/american_mcgees_alice_mad_hatter.jpg. Presumably being rebuilt after Alice killed him last time.

    @kingsmikefan It's a continuation of the plot, 11 years later. @Gungalei You're right - how'd I miss the little wing?!
  • jackthemenace - March 7, 2011 9:29 p.m.

@Tyler- Thanks, I might have to try and find it somewhere. Think it's available for Mac?

I'm fascinated, now. I have to play this game. Looks like a God of War style hack and slash, too. But, to people who played it: is it a rehash of the last one's plot? For captcha: I don't have an upside down A on my keyboard

The "rat" in the 4th-to-last screen looks mighty jabberwock-y.

Too bad the Alice game before this was PC only. I wonder if they will ever remake it for the consoles? That would be a great pre-order bonus.

Sweet!!! I like the look of the many dresses I do love playing dress up maybe they correspond to different play styles or they are just a fashion statement they look good. The special power up looks better you know you mean business when you scream with bloody eyes. Can't wait for the slaughter at least I got a date now.

@jackthemenace It's the sequel to American McGee's Alice, which was released on PC in 2000. In it, Alice confronted the death of her family in a similarly-macabre Wonderland. Madness Returns takes place 11 years later, as she attempts to understand her past and present psychosis in the form, apparently, of creepy animated dolls and blood-filled teapots.

    Directed by Clive Barker.

I noticed the Cheshire Cat! I want this so much. Honestly, I'd never seen anything bout it before now, but then i saw the gameplay trailer and so much WANT bursted out there is a fountain of WANT pouring from my heart and making a pool of WANT on my bedroom floor. Wait, that's not WANT...! But yeah, it looks pretty damn amazing, especially the more gothic looking parts. The not- emo sections looks, well... wrong... Is this the sequel to another game that's already out though? @reCAPTCHA: Insionfo returns...!? NO! What will Gotham City do NOW!?
  • sgloomy - March 7, 2011 8:28 p.m.

this game looks awesome! I'm as excited for this game as I am for Arkham City, which is a lot!
