Final Fantasy VI coming to Wii Virtual Console in Japan

Final Fantasy I through V are already available on the Wii's Virtual Console, while Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX have been released on the PS3 as PS One Classics. There's only one gap in the re-release list of the pre-PS2 Final Fantasy games, and it's about to be filled.

Final Fantasy VI, the last numbered Final Fantasy game released on the Super Nintendo - and the final one for a Nintendo system at all - will be making its way to the Virtual Console next month.

Final Fantasy VI was already re-released for the PlayStation and the Game Boy Advance, but this is the first time it will be available on a console's digital download platform.

So far the news only applies to the Japanese version of the Virtual Console. Stateside, we're still waiting for most of the Final Fantasy games to make their way to the Wii.

Nevertheless, it is a big feat that Square Enix has released every single one of the original nine Final Fantasy games on current generation consoles. Maybe now it will have some time to work on that HD remake of Final Fantasy VII? Nah, maybe not...

Hell no, I'm not playing that on VC. I want a full 3DS remake a la FF4.

Good thing this is coming to the VC, Japan-exclusive or not. The VC has been suffering for the past year or so, despite the fact they haven't reached its full potential yet. Chrono Trigger? Mega Man X? Star Fox? Contra? Release those games before calling it a day, Nintendo.

I'll still keep playing FFVI on my cell phone. When I'm traversing the land. It's pretty boss. And I don't have a Wii either. I totally would buy it if I did, though.

If they do end up doing a remake of FF6, I'm not sure if it will have the same charm to it. FF6 came out nearing the end of the SNES when sprites were able to look plenty good and it was set up to work for the abstraction that turn based stand in line combat needs. Once you shift toward more realism, the whole thing just looks more awkward. Having played the FF4 remake, I have to say that the graphics really aren't as good as they were on the SNES in my opinion. So, if they do remake FF6, I hope they'd level up those graphics and avoid trying to make the characters look like Amano's designs, those all suffer from being too cluttered and every character looking basically the same. (FF7 would not have the latter problem since Amano didn't do the character designs).

A remake of VI would be glorious. I don't care if it's 3d or all sprites, the source material is almost too good to mess up :P I honestly believe that if people were to play a remake of VI and VII, side by side, with only sound and graphics upgraded, VI would be better, because VII sacrificed some minor elements in the story and plot layout in order to deliver all those amazing "wow" moments that could only have happened then. VI is the epitome of what a Final Fantasy can be, in my opinion, and while it still holds up pretty well, It'd bring tears to my eyes to see it get a new artistic interpretation.

I'm gonna have to agree with that I'd rather have a remake of VI, probably the best FF of them all.

If they did a total remake of VI, that would be the best thing ever. (if you couldn't tell from my avatar, I'm a bit of a fan)

Let's hope it makes it into America. I'm never going to be able to play FFVII since I only have Nintendo consoles, but from what I've heard, FFVI is the next best Final Fantasy game, if not better.

@electrofreeze I totally agree with you. FFVI is one of my favorite games ever made. I've played it on the SNES and the Gameboy Advance. I'd really like to see this hit the Virtual Console stateside.

"Maybe now it will have some time to work on that HD remake of Final Fantasy VII? Nah, maybe not..." I would rather see a remake of VI, but that will never happen...
