Ex Rare man suggests Activision just using GoldenEye name to make dosh, we suffer mild heart-attacks

Designer on the N64 classic claims use of the name is a 'business decision'

Words: on September 9, 2010

As Gordon Gekko once said, before he got thrown in the slammer for insider trading: 'Greed is good.' Y'know what's also good? A certain N64 shooter starring the world's most blocky British Secret Service agent. In a recent interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Martin Hollis (who worked on the original GoldenEye) claims the FPS' name being dug out for Activision's upcoming Wii title isn't exactly being done with the aim of honouring the first game. This cat, it seems, has claws.

Speaking to ONM he says: "I imagine it is a business decision isn't it? This name is valuable, let's use it. I find it hard to picture Activision's top management being excited about the original and wanting to do it justice. In fact, I find it hard to imagine them being excited about any game. It's my perception that they are trying to be EA, only more so. I think they are doing a fine job at that."

On a more positive note, he goes onto praise GoldenEye 007's developers, Eurocom, stating: "I know and like Eurocom. I think they are a good company. I'm confident they have done their very best."

The game, which will recreate several levels from the N64 title, does look pretty promising. Well, as Wii shooters go <shudder>. That horrible back-handed compliment aside, we are looking forward to replaying the classic dam stage again. We'd dust off our N64s to play the old game again, but seriously...

Above: We love a blocky texture as much as the next mentalist, but there are limits

Above: This, on the other hand, is more agreeable to our eye sockets

And as much as we love cowering under the stairs with the Golden Gun-wielding, N64 Oddjob...

We think we prefer his Wii counterpart. Using him will still guarantee you your own level of hell in the afterlife, mind. You despicable cheater.

To lighten the mood of all this developer bitching and heated Oddjob debate, please enjoy a picture of a big fish. Which, handily, is also called a Golden Eye. Thank you, thank you. We're here all week. Try the veil. It's almost semi edible.

Above: A Golden Eye fish. Don't say you don't learn nuthin' by coming here

Forget Oddjob or Brosnan Bond,I want to play the fish! Current-Gen James Pond or no sale! I'd prefer it in 1080p,but what are you going to do?

Hmm,why are there no motion-controlled games that put the player in control of piscene protagonists, anyway?

blocky textures - that's no excuse not to still play the original

i still bust out my N64 to play the original occasionally - don't really care about the low-quality graphics as the game is good enough to get past that...same way I stil play Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Star Fox 64. 00 Agent mode on Facility - still one of the best FPS levels of all-time imo

Oh, and awesome call Fusionmix - Timesplitters 2 was pure brilliance.

@AdonisX82: It's got Daniel Craig in it because they'd already hired him for Blood Stone. They weren't going to shell out for Pierce Brosnan too just for a Wii-only game. Hence why this doesn't have ANY of the actors from the original.

The levels have changed because that's the part that's owned by Rare. That's why this isn't just a special edition. As to why it's only on Wii and DS, well that's because GoldenEye The Game was published by Nintendo. They can't put it on any other platforms.

MrDuracraft - "I don't get why they can't both care about profit"

This seems to be the perenial issue with Activision these days though. If it's not about the money, they're not interested.

I don't get why they can't both care about profit and still make a good game? FPS's on the Wii, for some inexplicable reason (Primes 1, 2, 3 are all great), are hard to do though, so it may fall short.

After the whole "you have to subscribe to CoD" idea, this isn't surprising at all. Thanks a lot, Kotick. Dick.

likely just a plan to cash in on the name, not that I forsake their efforts.

I forgot to say... This game may be good on it's own merits, and so far it seems it will, but to call it goldeneye is doing an injustice to not only the original game, but the movie itself

I don't own a Wii, so I won't be getting this. But even if I did, I'd be skeptical. First off, last I checked, Pierce Brosnan played Bond in the Goldeneye movie. I don't know if it's legal crap or what, but why the hell is Daniel Craig in this? I mean if they did it like the original where they had all the other Bonds as playable in multi-player (or perhaps, as an unlockable once you've beaten the game), that would make sense, but having him as the default charecter is stupid. Second, from the screen shots and videos i've seen so far, it looks to me like the level design has been drastically changed. One of the impressive things about the original was the attention to detail Rare paid to the sets used in the film, and more than that, how well they implemented objectives and that around those designs. I felt like I was playing the movie, cause everything was recognizable. I mean, the cradle level in this game is completly differant. I find that disappointing. I think the only changes that should've been made were better graphics (of course), better cutscenes, voice acting, and better hit-detection ( improving on the "shoot them in the leg, they limp" etc. system ) then i'd be all over it

I'm not trying to have a go but there have been numerous James Bond games since GoldenEye one even featuring the name GoldenEye why is this one being seen as so special?

if they release this as a free download for original goldeneye owners to make up for the overpirced £50 on the original n64 game, then i will believe its not about the money

I'd be curious how in an alternate universe the original all cleaned up and running 60 fps would sell in comparison to this spiced up version. Perfect Dark came out on Xbox Live March 17 with cleaned up graphics and frame rate. It stayed in the top 20 Arcade downloads for about 15 weeks.

To be fair to Activision I'm pretty sure everyone already figured the Goldeneye remake is about the money.

    AW SNAP Y'ALL

but seriously, the only gaming console I have is a Wii (and a PC), and even I think it's a stupid decision to have this game as a Wii exclusive

It's like they think everyone who owns a 360 or a PS3 didn't exist in 1998 and therefor wouldn't care about this remake and not buy it anyway

And, I have my serious doubts about this game being anything like GoldenEye 64, it's just not possible, they should have never named it that because it's my making my nastolgic nerd mind go NO! NO NO NO! NO! NOOOOO NO! NO!

It won't be as good as the original, that's just impossible. That doesn't mean it won't still be a blast to have 3 friends come over, open some beers, play some 4 player split screen and bitch about screen watchers though.
