Epic Games boss open to Gears of War on PS3

Shares

A Gears of War trilogy on the PS3? It's possible. After years of enjoying exclusivity on Xbox 360, Epic Games President Mike Capps has stated he'd be very interested in porting the popular franchise to Sony's system. Not that it's even remotely close to happening, of course, but he'd be psyched if it did.

"I'd love to ship the Gears trilogy on PlayStation. That would be fun. I want to be there; I want to be everywhere," said Capps in a GDC interview with Industry Gamers.

Capps clarified his interest in porting Gears of War to the PS3 audience was in no way a slight against Microsoft, but instead a desire to reach out to a larger audience. In fact, said Capps, Epic's relationship with Microsoft has been exceptionally rosey from start, adding, “The amount of support they put behind Gears ... It was really to launch their platform, to show what Xbox 360 could do - the whole HD experience with Samsung. I think we really delivered that. So we continue to get love from Microsoft in a way that I don't think we could get from a publisher focused on cross-platform."

Though he denied any substance to his statements, Capps did note Epic Games owns Gears of War, and are therefore the ultimate masters of its destiny. We're sure if the studio ever wanted to pursue its PlayStation options, Sony wouldn't put up too much of a... resistance.

For now, Gears of War 3 is still on track for an exclusive, worldwide Xbox 360 release on September 20th

Want this to happen just to see what Kevin butler does to advertise it

This would certainly be a smart move on their part to reach a wider audience and make some more money in the process. Surely there's plenty of PS3 owners who have yet to play the Gears franchise, but would likely love to do so given the chance.

lol, sometimes i wonder why i even own a 360. The exclusives are just not there anymore.
  • PIZZAKING92 - March 3, 2011 9:49 p.m.

I am smelling an e3 surprise.
  • kingsmikefan - March 3, 2011 9:56 p.m.

Is there really any reason to buy a 360 anymore that isn't Crackdown?
  • Kethmach - March 3, 2011 10:07 p.m.

Is there a reason to buy a 360? Yes... Gears of War (as it's NOT an announcement that it's EVER going to PS3), and there's Halo, there's Fable, there's Forza Motorsport, there's Kinect... it's not as if the only reason to own a console is because of exclusives. That's just absurd and fanboy baiting. You own a console to play the games you want to play on them. It's not like there isn't a wide, but quickly shrinking net of exclusives out there. Look how many exclusives Sony lost to MS over the past few years- it's not as if the trend isn't going to stop... but it doesn't mean a back catalog of stuff is suddenly going to poor in to the other system. If Gears goes to PS in some form or another (another trilogy after this one is over) then there will be a Sony developer making MS games (like Insomniac). Jumping ship or talking about jumping ship because a developer wants to make more money doesn't suddenly make a system less attractive. Gears going ONLY to Sony would be an upset. Mass Effect going ONLY to Sony- would be an upset. But as Call of Duty being the prime example of a multi-console piece of software shows that it's not about exclusives (as COD was just named the biggest PS3 game to date).

It would be interesting to see how it would look on PS3.
  • Chevapravatdumrong - March 3, 2011 10:13 p.m.

I could see this happening in 2012, similar to ME2 coming to PS3 for extra money, and PS3 fanboys know they want to see Gears on PS3no matter how much they deny it. However no one should get they're hops up.
  • Fuzunga - March 3, 2011 10:13 p.m.

I don't think Sony fanboys would want it.
  • BAEM7 - March 3, 2011 10:51 p.m.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Shorter - March 3, 2011 10:59 p.m.

First Bioshock, then Dead Rising, and then Mass Effect. I hate how Xbox exclusives are being ported just for extra money and especially how everyone seems to agree with it. Porting may increase a company's revenue but it takes a way the integrity of the games in my opinion turning great games into common whores.

"...resistance." I like what you did there haha
  • EvilChicken - March 3, 2011 11:31 p.m.

Even if, mostly likely still won't get it
  • F4G1TR0N - March 3, 2011 11:31 p.m.

@Shorter The Ps3 people have lost quite of there exclusives over the years, ranging from Tekken to DMC. TO be honest, game companies need money, and multi-platforming is the way to go, as Kethmach said. They are people working for a company that deserve payment, like any other form of entertainment. My argument is starting to lose meaning lol. I would like to agree with one of your statements, losing Mass Effect was a big deal. The others, not so much.

  • Blue2 - March 4, 2011 1:13 a.m.

First Mass effect 2, now Gears of War. Seems like Sony pulling the underdog trick again and then the end, PS3 will win.
  • DarkRIZEN - March 4, 2011 1:45 a.m.

no fuck this shit just stay in the same damn concle i mean if they do this then at least put god of war for the xbox
  • AGENTJORRRG - March 4, 2011 2:07 a.m.

Good for PS3 owners I guess. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it's good to let as many people play is as you can.
