E3 2011: Far Cry 3 live demo impressions

“You are Jason Brody. You're boat's been destroyed and your girlfriend is missing. You're trapped on an island,” Ubisoft Montreal's representative told the audience during Ubisoft's press conference. “Good luck, you're gonna need it.” With no introduction other than this, the live demo for what we came to find out was Far Cry 3 began.

The live demo began with Brody awakening on the island. Equipping his DSLR camera, he zooms in on a dire scene: bad guys dressed like modern day rebels murdering innocents in a village. Suddenly, Brody's attacked, bound and comes face to face with the supposed leader of the outfit – a mohawked man asking if he ever taught us the definition of insanity.

After pushing a cinder block with Brody's feet tied to it off a cliff, the demoer wiggled free of the restraints and swam towards the surface, by dozens of other hostages who met the terrible fate. The rest of the demo included Brody skulking around the village with a machete and rifle, showing off melee kills. Brody dove off a cliff and rammed the blade into an enemy's chest and stabbed another guy right in the heart.

The demoer engaged the village – a usual Far Cry no-no – and had the whole platoon of rebels on his ass. He made his way to a helicopter and jammed a gun into the pilot's skull demanding they take off. As they did, a surprise rocket took down the bird and Brody woke to the Mohawked jerk asking us if we knew the definition of insanity. Snap to title: FAR CRY 3.

All we know is that FC3 is coming next year and appears as its going back to the deserted island atmosphere that FC2 strayed from several years ago. Far Cry 3 is playable on the floor, so we'll get your more deets as E3 continues.

FC2 was awful! It was just going back and forth around the map with respawning enemies and pointless missions. It felt like it was the same mission over and over. Like boonattack said, it's mind numbingly dull FC1 was far better.

" You're boat's been destroyed and your girlfriend is missing. " Really Gamesradar? You are boat's been destroyed and ... etc.

I rrreeeallllyyy want a follow-up to Far Cry 2.. A flawed master-piece that. If they just polished that game and made it the game is was meant to be, they will have made the only game I need.

Im suprised that Far Cry 2 is regarded so high by some people. I remember when the first assassins creed came out and people hated it for its repitition, but yet somehow FC2 avoided this criticism. I found it mind numbingly dull 2bh. Wild Eye: "Did I ever tell you the definition of Insanity?" Brody: "Was it playing your last game?" Gotta admit though, this game looks nice. Heres hoping its better than 2.

Hmm. Far Cry 2 is one of my all-time favorite games. The screens here don't look to great, but I trust that this game will be handled properly. I desperately hope that it's a good game. Beh, but this Jason Brody "rescue my girlfriend" bullshit does not sound like anything I want to take part in after experiencing the maturity of the Jackal's story. Please. Don't. Fuck. This. Up.

What? Back to Far Cry 1? Guess I'll just stick to FC2. Africa > Tropical island.

@padonati Crytek only made the Far Cry.

I'm inclined to disagree with you hester2. FC3 seems to be VERY similar to FC1 in style and attitude (Island setting and less than serious story). It does seem to be adopting FC2's gameplay improvements though.

Screw Crytek. After Crysis 2 I am not giving them any more of my money.

Far Cry 2 was great. Not perfect, but great. It was like a true sequel to Mercenaries.

I'm hooked. I want more!! I never played FC2. Please fellow gamers, send me a message. Let me know if FC2 is worth my time. Why or why not. Thanks.

@lilspooky It's hard to reboot a series that consists entirely of standalone games. I think it's more like GTA, where you have games with similar hooks (open-ended combat) but brand new stories. @DaveGoose You can find it for about $10 on any platform. Try it, it's amazing, it just takes some getting used to. @GamesRadar Upside down AND mirrored combo recaptchas are not cool. It took me two minutes to read the word, and now I don't know whether to start at the first or last letter.

To quote Dan Amrich: I just jizzed

Looks cool, I hope they keep the open world elements but make the world more alive similar to how Red Dead Redemption did.

Is it a reboot or just a new story? i want more details. You have my attention ubisoft.

I read on GTTV or Gametrailer's stream news ticker that weapon jamming crap from Far Cry 2 will be taken out for Far Cry 3. Thank god. Fix the respawning outposts and you'll be golden Ubisoft.

Great looking demo, I am mad I missed FC2
  • batmanboy11 - June 7, 2011 2:06 a.m.

    I'm excited for this.
  • hester2 - June 7, 2011 2:02 a.m.

Intriguing. I'm still unclear what significance the title "Far Cry" has with these games, since they're nothing alike. As long as they keep rocking (shut up, Far Cry 2 was great), I'm not complaining.
