Hit that level 30 cap a little too quickly in DC Universe Online? So did we. Luckily, the next monthly patch for Sony Online Entertainment’s MMO is a big one, adding more meat to that superhero casserole - Penguin meat, to be more specific.
In a recent interview, game director Chris Cao outlined plans for the upcoming March patch. Simply titled ‘Update 2,’ the new content will let players team up with Gotham’s own disfigured super villain by way of District Attorney Harvey Dent as they take on the portly Penguin. The instance will also solidify The Penguin into the game’s story by tying him to the Gotham underworld.
What's interesting, is that chance will play a factor in how the new solo instance plays out in that Dent/Two-Face will flip a coin at the beginning to decide his characteristics, leading to exactly 50% more replay value. Two-Face and his randomized coin toss will also appear as a Legends PvP character. Depending on how the coin flips, special attacks and character properties could be completely different from one PvP battle to the next as well.
Other updates mentioned in the interview range from subtle to hefty. Dimension-hopping Superman annoyance Mr. Mxyzptlk will appearance to help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Though not a ton of info is available for the Mxyzptlk event, we do know that the Mxyzptlk will be outside of instances to cause city-wide havoc, and that players will have access to rewards like Celtic costumes for a limited time.

According to Cao, the development team is also taking fan feedback into consideration as they plan more monthly updates. Cao mentions that PvP exploits have been addressed with this new patch, but the biggest addition will be what he calls “chat 2.0.” Very soon, PS3 players will get push-to-talk functionality with the D-pad in addition to a wide array of overhauled social features, including updated quick chat menus that make forming groups and kicking players easier. The social functions of the in-game PDA will also be tricked out as well.
In DC Universe Online’s case, more content can’t come soon enough, so it’s good to know that Update 2 is on the way.
