The comparison's probably been made already, but when did Fox News come to the UK? Even WITHOUT being blown out of proportion, I wager that at least half of the quotes the newspaper uses there have been taken out of context. Hell, my local newspaper- even YAHOO- writes better journalism than crap like that.

The Metro is shockingly bad, after the tragic shooting in Norway at the Labour party camp site, they quoted Anders Behring Breivik as saying that he learnt how to shoot a gun from playing World of Warcraft (in reality he tried to blame CoD)...

God, I hate newspapers. Even the good ones are sensationalist crap.

Ok. What if the raping did happen in the game? Would that be an issue? It's an 18+ game! In Dragon Age: Origins, in the city elf origin story a raping does happen, and you slaughter an entire castle full of men for it. There are a lot 18+ movies where raping happens (e.g.:The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) and no-one has a problem with it. It would be unacceptable only if you, the main character would be the rapist. That would be sick. Otherwise, you have to keep in mind that it's an 18+ game, only intended for a mature audience.

"Rape? In a Tomb Taider game? Potentially playable? My goodness, what scandal. I can't believe this could happen to poor old Lara. What's that? It doesn't happen? But... but... the headlines!" What is Tomb Taider?? :) This is classic for journalists to "misunderstand" something to make it "interesting". Especially when it comes to politics.

You know how many times I re-read that sentence before publishing without spotting the T? Maybe it's like that Plane-arium guy from South Park. "I have a rare bone condition that prevents me from being able to type the 'R' in Tomb Taider."

That's barely a sexual harassment letter at best. People love to push things out of proportion. "So you can eat grapes-" "RAPE! Did you say rape? Well, I heard RAPE!!"
  • TheIronMaiden - June 14, 2012 4:03 p.m.

Mainstream media of any kind needs to stay away from gaming altogether. I have never seen a good story come from any major news source whether it be online, on tv, or in the paper.

That writer sucks, incorrect grammar in the first paragraph. "The maker of the new Lara Croft game are using sexual violence as entertainment by including a rape scene, it was declared last night." If everyone wrote like that, I would be praised as the next Stephen King, Mark Twain, or Robert Frost. What a jackass of a writer.
  • PopeBenedictXVI - June 14, 2012 11:36 p.m.

It's a simple error in subject verb agreement. It happens all the time, relax. I imagine the likes of Stephen King have an editor to tidy up any slips in grammar. Personally, I enjoy Justin's articles. Keep it up Justin you long haired Zelda loving chess mastering scribe!
  • Hobogonigal - June 15, 2012 12:36 a.m.

You see, they are professional journalists (or not really with the crap they make up) who write a lot every day. The fact that they stuffed this up shows a rather awful use of grammar. Plus, even journalists have editors to look over their work. P.S. The sentence he quoted was from the picture of the newspaper, not GamesRadar. Besides the point, I agree this is a great article by Justin!

No, it's the Metro, therefore the "professional journalists" bit is completely wrong. It's an excuse for an umbrella handed out for free so they can rake in ad money by selling the front and back page picture rights to the highest bidder raking in the cash because it's all you can stare at when it's 6 am and your eyes can't focus any further than the "newspaper" being dangled in front of your face due to signal failure at Canada Water meaning that there are 1000 people on the platform trying to squeeze into a tube train. So, like GR, the Metro is equally journalism, but it's good to remember some journalism is more equal that others.
  • Hobogonigal - June 15, 2012 9:25 a.m.

Wow...from the sounds of it, The Metro has murdered your children and you are on a non-stop journey of revengence to purge them of their misdeeds. Or they are just really, really terrible.
  • KidJustKid - June 20, 2012 4:24 a.m.

    Try the terrible. UGH.
  • KidJustKid - June 14, 2012 3:11 p.m.

"...The Metro, a UK newspaper..." You use the word 'newspaper' in the loosest possible sense, Justin. It's more an umbrella substitute-cum-eye contact avoidance mechanism, but tomorrow morning, when sardine myself into a sweaty Jubilee line carriage, I'll pick up a Metro and amuse my self with the alleged 'journalism' or supposed 'newspaperyness' or lack thereof. While I hate this sort of blasé, deliberately contorted shockfest journalism, I loath even more the necessity of us as gamers contantly having to explain or justify ourselves, as if this is softcore porn being knocked off as highbrow art. Reminds me of Video Nastys, in that it's undeniable thar some games are really hard to handle and deal with complex issues in a brutal way. They also have a very primal or basic emotional appeal. So they're really highbrow art being knocked off as a gory game to sell well enough, in the same way they appeal of a David Cronenberg film is as much in the body horror as in the pointed and cynical statements he makes using those particular vehicles.

It's ridiculous that our shit UK papers find ONE WORD that someone in an interview says and blow it up into an actual news story, claiming something ridiculous. I thought the media was stupid with the whole alien sex thing from Mass Effect, but this takes the piss once again.
  • Cyberhero18 - June 14, 2012 2:38 p.m.

Read that very article in the Metro this morning, almost choked. It's abundantly clear that none of these people have seen any of the scenes they're referring to. The Metro even went as far as to get women's support groups involved. So now they're getting worried about glorifying sexual violence and it never even goes further than the smallest implication. Then, as GR points out, Lara knees the dude then later shoots and kills him. I don't even know why I'm always surprised when something like this happens.
  • avedon-arcade - June 14, 2012 2:29 p.m.

Crazy how this blew out of context. When this came out I immediately knew what scene they were talking about having watched the demo play at E3. Somehow either Jezebel or Kotaku mentioned how Lara gets "gang raped". I was like seriously?! The guy tried to grope her. Which isn't anything new in videogames. I don't know why they're changing their direction with Lara's backstory, but it's a reboot so that's fine. This Lara seems to be taking a helluva beating. Honestly after watching that short demo I can't imagine anyone continuing on. Bear traps, constant pratfalls, and attacks, this Lara is definitely taking a beating. But she's definitely not getting gang raped. It's just a much more green, insecure Lara we're seeing and it's interesting to note that if she didn't have the name Lara Croft or Tomb Raider on it, it would still make an interesting game.

I can't believe The Sun's still in print.
