The first trailer has arrived online for
The Railway Man
, in which Colin Firth attempts to face up to the demons he’s harbouring as a hangover of his participation in WW2.
Firth plays Eric Lomax, a war veteran who spent much of the war held as a Japanese prisoner of war, and tortured by a brutal officer.
When his old war companion (Stellan Skarsgård) informs him he has tracked down the officer in question, Lomax sets out for Japan in search of closure. But just what form that closure will take, remains to be seen…

With sterling support from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Hiroyuki Sanada and Jeremy Irvine as the younger version of Firth, there’s plenty to be excited about here, provided the film doesn’t get bogged down in the potentially saccharine pitfalls of such emotive material.
Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, with the story adapted from the memoirs of the real Eric Lomax, The Railway Man will open in the UK on 3 January 2014.
