Call of Duty: Black Ops is the best selling PS3 game ever, claims Activision

Call of Duty: Black Ops has already laid claim to numerous sales records - it scored the highest-grossing launch day of any entertainment product, its first-week sales set new game industry records, and it generated the most Xbox Live activity ever recorded in a 24-hour period. Hell, it probably holds the record for the most records. Now, Activision is saying that the game has already become the top selling PS3 title in the console's four-year history.

Back in November, on the first day it hit store shelves, Black Ops raked in $360 million. That shattered the old record for the most money earned on a videogame's launch day, which had been set by none other than Black Ops's predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. No other movie or music release has ever grossed as much on its launch day.

It doesn't come as a surprise, then, that Black Ops continues to pull in huge sales, but it does kind of make our heads twitch to hear that a game which has been out for less than four months has already sold more than any other title released on the PS3 since November 2006.

Activision says its claim is based on widely available sales numbers provided by firms like NPD Group, Chart-Track, and GfK. The only question left then is: how can Activision top this? Will Modern Warfare 3 again surpass the last CoD game, or is Activision's winning-streak going to peter out?

So if it's supposedly the PS3's best selling game ever, does that mean we'll see it adorned with Greatest Hits red and knocked down to $30? Nah, that's probably just wishful thinking on my part How about some numbers to back up this claim Activision?

I have made a vow to never buy another Activision game again until there are some serious changes with that company.
  • SAUGAPRIME - March 4, 2011 8:11 a.m.

Yea and they still didn't fix the problem in the game like they did with the 360 version. When i scroll down my list it takes forever, and it takes forever to send a game invite. On the 360 they don't have that problem.

I hope the money peters out. Until Kotick steps down or changes his managing style to "put extra fun into making video games" (as in, DON'T pump out the same old sequels year after year while shutting down the companies that dare to make something new and exciting, DO take occasional breathers from the cash cow franchises to make room for marketing for the new IPs) and "give everyone what they deserve" (as in, DON'T fire the lead devs behind your biggest franchise because they wanted to work on something else, DO give them creative freedom and raises), I will not buy one Activision game new (bought Blur pre-owned, although only after I received word that the studio was being closed).

single player is terrible but multiplayer is good when it does'nt crash or you have to team up with a bunch of 12 year olds. but hey hype and brand recognition sell.
  • reeperskull - March 3, 2011 10:36 p.m.

wasn't the game a crap port on ps3? if so that sucks because now activision knows they can make a crapy port and idiots will still buy it. i haven't bought a game from activison for over a year now and im seeing no reason to.
  • xombiesarelove - March 3, 2011 10:15 p.m.

@reson8er The best part of the single player is just hearing Ice Cube curse a lot.
  • IceBlueKirby - March 3, 2011 9:34 p.m.

It's a sad day when a game like Black Ops has apparently outsold gems like Uncharted 2 and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. Although like others, I'm pretty certain a Modern Warfare 3 would shatter BlOps records, mainly because so many people will buy it just to see if it's still any good.
  • idlemindkiller - March 3, 2011 9:28 p.m.

well since it costs 60 dollars compared to say 10 for a movie ticket or 10-15 for a cd or album, its not surprising to me that it beats out other entertainment divisions by so much. still fun to play though.
  • cj12297 - March 3, 2011 8:34 p.m.

really. with the biggest entertainment launch i didnt think it would be
  • reson8er - March 3, 2011 8:32 p.m.

If the single player demo is any indication, its tragic that they achieved that.
  • KaiokenKid - March 3, 2011 8:32 p.m.

This kinda disheartens me. Black Ops was good, but there are better games on PS3.
  • NightCrawler_358 - March 3, 2011 8:29 p.m.

Everyone likes Modern Warfare better, so I think it will beat out Black Ops. Then after MW3 is the peak of COD, sales will go down and down until it becomes like Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk or dare I say it... Dynasty Warriors.
  • BadLadJon - March 3, 2011 8:28 p.m.

congratulations desmond, you're first, you're gonna be so successful in life... back on topic after that "findmakarov" incident im actually already hyped for Modern Warfare 3, if it blends black ops and MW2 it should turn out a great game :D
  • mastersword369 - March 3, 2011 8:27 p.m.

And it doesnt deserve a cent.
