Batman: Arkham City's Robin design explained with first color art

After months of rumors, a couple weeks ago developer Rocksteady confirmed that Robin would not only be in the sequel to Arkham Asylum but is playable in a set of challenge maps. Some were shocked by Robin’s appearance, particularly the shaved head that’s all the rage with space marines these days. Today Rocksteady had an explanation for Robin’s new look, and even included the first full-color image of comic’s premier sidekick.

On the official Arkham City forums Senior Concept Artist Kan Mutfic gave some insight into AC’s Robin. “We wanted to create a Robin that players would identify as a contemporary character and move away from the traditional ‘Boy Wonder’ image that most people know. Our vision of Robin is the one of a troubled young individual that is calm and introverted at times but very dangerous and aggressive if provoked.” Troubled individual? Sounds more like other men that have carried the mantle, not so much Tim Drake, the official identity of AC’s Robin.

Kan also clarified the somewhat extreme haircut. “The shaved head is inspired by cage fighters, because we thought that Robin might be doing that in his spare time to keep him on his toes. Still, we kept all the classic trademarks of Robin’s appearance, such as the red and yellow colors of his outfit, the cape and the mask... He is back and he means business." Robin’s a part-time MMA fighter? That’s pretty unconventional, but we like it, and it certainly separates itself from the “golly gee” boy scout the mainstream world may still see Robin as.

From a comic book nerd standpoint, this version of Robin is tougher than the one we’re used to, looking older, and simmering with more rage then we’re used to. However, this may be Tim Drake, the third Robin, but the look doesn’t match his comic counterpart too well. Tim was the most cerebral Robin; though he could keep up in combat and acrobatics, his best strength was his keen detective skills. This Robin’s aggressive edge fits more with the current Robin, Damian Wayne, or the second, temporarily deceased second Robin, Jason Todd. Perhaps his in-game personality will be an amalgamation of the three.

They need to make a video game of Robin with this specific characteristics and also a comic book series, it would be epic.

I really like this look, Really liked the character, and it's a good thing that he's in AC.

Awesome job on the costume. I'm a big fan of hoods.

I know a bit about the various Robin's but overall I'm pretty much clued out about them because I've intentionally avoided material regarding him. Not a fan. I'm sure Arkham willdo great with him though, others have so it's not impossible.

I wonder if its Batman's Bastard son as Robin.

Wow, I absolutly hate it, but I do have to admit that I can completely see their justification for going the route they did (except the MMA part. Get that bullshit out of there, even if it is just in-your-head backstory). I think they got it right.

Mayhaps this is just right before robin goes what? into Nightwing im not as familar with DC lore as i am in Marvel but thats just my guess

Just don't make him do leap of faith...

I hope he still says "golly gee, batman!", but in a more sarcastic and disrespectful way, to make him grittier.

Damn, where's all the Robin hate coming from? Robin's an awesome superhero. My favorite iteration is the one from the Teen Titans animated show. That Robin could kick a colossal amount of ass. I know he's not the best iteration to put in Arkham City, I'm just saying. Don't know if I like Robin's look in AC, but I'll reserve judgment.

I really hope that hood and cape doesn't make the cut. Robin isn't a Sith. Still, he seems to be really shaping up to an awesome alternate character. I kinda wanna play as him a bit more than bats...just a bit.

To be honest, I'm crazy nervous about this game. I thought Arkham Asylum was perfect (aside from their rendition of Bane) but everything that I've heard about this game makes me feel weird about it. I hate the black and white art style, I don't like the idea of playing Catwoman, the combat in the '12 minute play' video didn't look like it was as much fun, and now Robin looks kind of terrible... so I'm nervous. However, with as wonderful as the original game was... I'll trust them...

Oh god, I hope an optional outfit for him is an Affliction shirt with glitter, a cross, and angel wings on it, along with a pair of Oakley's with the biggest O branding possible on the side. It'd be wicked sick, brah.

So this is pretty much Damian with Tim's name. I think the cape could stand to be a little longer.

I think they should have gone with a Frank Millar inspired Robin rather then a Nolan inspired one. Like FauxFurry said. What's more creepy and edgier? An uber serious batman lite character causing grievous bodily harm to criminals or a silver age and silly Robin character who says things like "Holy Hand grenades Batman! That Bank robbers head just blew up!"
  • Turboash - July 6, 2011 9:14 p.m.

Looks like that Assassin's Creed doucher.
  • DeathbyFira - July 6, 2011 9:13 p.m.

Dude i am just happy robin is back and aside the shaved head "been there seen that" he looks kickass i dont care which robin it is he is going tt kick some clown ass all the same lol
  • FauxFurry - July 6, 2011 9:13 p.m.

Considering that Robin's redesign was inspired by MMA, it could have been much worse, ditching the upper part of his costume altogether with the Robin emblem being moved to his cape or applied with spirit gum like his mask(though that kind of sounds more like something a Luchador would wear). The idea of the 'old' Robin still behaving as he once did while doing grievous bodily harm to criminals strikes me as being more amusing than a darker, edgier Robin going about his business as Bat-Man lite. "Holy Hospitalizing Hay-makers, Bat-Man!""Indeed, Old Chum." Rocksteady needs to get Adam West and Burt Ward for the next game if Kevin Conroy has had enough.
  • Fuzunga - July 6, 2011 9:10 p.m.

Yeah, his Robin costume looks like Damian's. I want to see his Red Robin costume, which is actually my favorite of the Robin/Robin spinoff costumes.
