Batman: Arkham City gameplay trailer - Uncharted 2 level of quality jump, or are we getting giddy too soon?

A good sequel to a good game is always exciting. We all know this. Gears of War 2, Halo 3, please stand up and be appreciated. But then there are sequels to good games which iterate and improve on what's gone before that they instantly make their originators look like a trailer for the main event. Uncharted 2, Half-Life 2, Resident Evil 4, this is your time to take a bow. And if you ask me, this first real gameplay trailer for Batman: Arkham City drops very strong hints that the follow up to Arkham Asylum could well hit that latter category.

As fully paid-up bat-geeks, myself and Nathan are currently vibrating with excitement. You will too.

Sweet. Baby. Jeezee. Seriously. "Agog" would be the word. The scale and sweeping, decayed beauty of Gotham on show here already makes this feel like one of the definitive depictions of the city for me, in any medium. And Batman himself looks off the chart this time. Those new flying mechanics should be amazing when harnessed to flit around what look like much bigger, more varied, open-air city block environments.

That ground pound entrance and helicopter hijack? Textbook Batman. And interestingly, it looks like he's using that chopper to stealthily move to higher ground, rather than simply 'jacking it in order to take the pilot down. I'm already boggling at the possibilities of this new expanded Arkham experience.

What do you think? Reckon Arkham City really can join that pantheon of legendary uber-sequels I mentioned at the top? And what do you reckon to the trailer soundtrack? Cool implimentation of unusual music choice, or horrible misfire?

i have to disagree with the ground pound. i don't think batman has enough muscles for a shockwave. i mean in a sense that batmans a superhero not a superperson

wow. awesome trailer. and i feel the music fits just perfectly. if anyone's wondering it's "short change hero" by the heavy.

This game is gonna be phenomenal. As for the music, perfect choice imo. Anyone here who's read the comics and is into the mythos knows that Gotham is a TERRIBLE place, even for the scumballs, but they're still better off than the honest people, and someone who actually wants to do good is practically screwed.

is it just me, or does Batman: Arkham city look a lot like AssCreed? Still looks great, and I'm defiantly getting it.

I really don't like the static gameplay shots. The part where Batman grapples onto the helicopter just screams "Derp". But other than that, the more open world feel they're going with this game looks like its going to work really damned well.

I am too excited for this sequel! The first was amazing and addictive storytelling and gameplay, can't wait to see how this one comes together:). I enjoyed the music, it's different but somehow it works with the dark, decayed atmosphere of Gotham they showed in this trailer with it. I also loved how Hugo Strange's dialogue at the beginning of the sequel set the tone for the rest of the trailer, and perhaps the whole game when it comes out?? We'll see...

game looks amazing i might have to go buy the first game now. the only thing that didnt looked off was catwomans facial expressions when she was talking, it wasnt that convincing that she meant what she was saying.

Was a big fan of Arkham Asylum and it looks to be that Rocksteady is making another winner with Arkham City. If all the new gameplay mechanics they are implementing work well then this game will be bad ass!!

Also, so glad to see Harley is as smug as ever. The early screenshots had me worried.

I might spend as much time just flying around as I did in that first level of Super Mario 64.

I'm kind of nervous about placing this kind of expectation on Rocksteady. I don't want to be too badly disappointed if the game turns out to be crap, or worse, just plain average. But I've got my fingers crossed that they can pull off a miracle. (Same for Naughty Dog with Uncharted 3. I hope the third round with Nathan Drake isn't a dud, either.)

This isn't the game we need right now, But it's the game we deserve.
  • mckillustrator - March 15, 2011 8:10 p.m.

Thank god they delayed the first game for several months to polish otherwise we might never have gotten this
