6 things the Halo mystery could be

Bungie has been teasing us again with a picture via Twitter, along with the tweet 'Just got this mysterious image and word that something big is dropping this week?!'

It shows a Spartan helmet with lights on the side, with the reflection of some Halo 3-style flooring in it. What can this mean? Well, as we see it there are five clear possibilities. But first have a look for yourself:

Above: This is the picture. What comes to mind?

Here are some pseudo-logical conclusions:

It's Halo 4!

This is completely improbable, but still possible. Especially when you look at the following picture. What we've done here is try to see what's reflected in the Spartan's helmet by mirroring the image, boosting the contrast and squashing it to reverse the distortion that the rounded surface provides. In it, you can clearly see a '4' and what looks like an 'O' before it. There it is - Halo 4. Even though it would make everyone forget about Halo: Reach. And Bungie are meant to be moving on after Reach. But even so, clearly Halo 4.

Above: You heard it here first

It's an April Fool

Granted, it's not even April 1 yet, but it's that week, so you can expect things to get very silly very soon. Bungie have made April Fool's gags before, so we wouldn't put it past them doing the same this year. If a 'big announcement' is 'dropping this week', it would be the worst week of the year to pick, especially for journos like us who have to work out whether they're actually serious or not. Speaking of which...

Halo Tennis

Are you sure those are black and yellow markings on the floor? Or is that a giant tennis ball wearing a Halo helmet? It's Halo Tennis - coming to Xbox Live for 1200 MS points this Junevember.

Above: Master Chief - meet Ace Chief. You have met your match

A Halo movie

The picture does depict a very realistic-looking helmet. Either it's a new game with astonishingly lifelike graphics (fingers crossed), or it'll be a Halo movie. We're not sure how the latter would work - it's hard to convey complex emotions when you've got a mirror for a face. Well, unless it's reflected bemusement - it's pretty good for that.

Master Chief in Halo: Reach

This is perhaps the most likely conclusion. Reach is supposedly Bungie's last Halo game so it would make sense that their biggest character should appear somewhere in it. Even though the game is a prequel to Halo. Even if it's only slightly feasible, we reckon it's probably. After all, one in a million chances come good 99% of the time.

It's a Live-enabled remake of Halo 2

Seeing as the old Xbox Live is being switched off, it would be cool if the original games were re-released for new Xbox Live. They could even bung in Halo 1 and add multiplayer functionality. That would be a really cool surprise and a BIG thank you to all of the people who continued playing Halo 2 even after it was a hideously outdated, wheezing mess that was holding back the evolution of Xbox 360's online service. Nah, we're not bitter.

So that's out five cents/suggestions. What do you think it's all about?

I think it will most likely end up being Master Chief making an appearence in Reach, after all, he was on the planet when it was attacked. Can't see it being an April fool somehow...

It wouldn't be too great of a stretch in the Halo 'verse to have MCPO John-117 appear at the Battle of Reach. In the Halo backstory, John-117 does play a role during the Battle of Reach. While all of the other Spartans are sacrificing themselves protecting the MAC generators on Reach's surface, John-117, Linda-058, and James-??? were going to an abandoned docking station to get rid of a NAV database that had the location of Earth and all the other colonies. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was a brief cameo, or even if you got to play that short segment where John-117 has to destroy the NAV database.

Halo 4 seems unlikely. Were they not supposed to have stopped making Halo games anyways? I could have sworn I read that the 3rd was the last one they said they would make...then came OSDT and Reach. Or maybe im imagining things.

    Mastur@Chef! Heh, go aussies xD

I would love a Halo 1/Halo 2 updated release with sharper graphics, cheivos, and live capability built into Halo 1. Would be a fist day purchase for me. They need to give their originals love like Sony has with God of War. I highly expect an appearance of the big guy in Reach, as Reach ends with the Pillar of Autumn jumping away from Reach with the, thought to be, last remaining Spartan-II S-117 leading immediately into the events of Halo. I suspect in the end to see the Cheif lower himself into the cryo tube and the door to shut before the familiar voice of Cortana echo's through the ship preparing to jump through slip-space.

@Redeater No, you aren't imagining. They had said Halo 3 was the last one, but who stops when there is still money to be made?

It actually looks a lot like chief's armor but who knows? Can't wait to find out mind you!

  • mattol58 - March 31, 2010 12:16 p.m.

I heard Red vs Blue are using this pic too for season 8
  • jeanettetay - March 31, 2010 12:39 p.m.

The spartan you play is Master Chief when he was a newbie!! That's what I think!
  • awil117 - March 31, 2010 12:58 p.m.

I'm not paying you 5 cents, but that that does seem cool that you went through all that trouble so I didn't have to. xDDD
  • sveini22 - March 31, 2010 1:03 p.m.

i dont care what its is as long as it is 360 exclusive
  • Bloodstorm - March 31, 2010 2:21 p.m.

@jeanettetay Master Chief was already in the service for about 20 years before the events of Reach, excluding the ages of 6-19 in which he was in training on Reach. You play as an unknown Spartan-III, and the rest of your team is also a group of Spartan-III's.

This can't be an April Fools, every April Fools joke Bungie does is Pimps at Sea related. If this is an April Fools joke, the full picture damn well better be the Chief on a 17th century sloop wearing a purple velvet coat.
  • GrrSnort - March 31, 2010 2:53 p.m.

It's going to be an April Fools thing. Rooster Teeth are premiering the new season of Red vs. Blue on April 1st (no joke). My bet is Bungie are playing with that.
  • Turboash - March 31, 2010 3:04 p.m.

Yes... that's 'clearly' a 4... lol. Here's an even bigger mystery... why does anyone still care about Halo!?
  • ihopethisisnotantistasblood - March 31, 2010 3:16 p.m.

now i can't unsee the tennis ball
  • 8akiho8 - March 31, 2010 3:55 p.m.

now i can't unsee the tennis ball +1
  • VTheSystemV - March 31, 2010 4:26 p.m.

Probably Chief appearing in Reach. They might do a level just focussed on him, where the Spartans hear a NAV database thing has gone down, and then it'll cut to that event. I hate Master Chief
  • mattol58 - March 31, 2010 4:52 p.m.

that seems to be a door in his reflection but dont know what the reflection on top of his helmet is?
