This is why I'm really starting to wonder why people think shooters are just fot mp. Sure we still have plenty dude bro shooters but the narrative quality is just getting better. And Bioshock infinite isn't even out yet.

Great article! I just finished Halo 4, Spec Ops, and Far Cry 3 back to back to back, and I was thinking along the same lines. The storylines are really going to some interesting places well above and beyond the sometimes jingoistic and/or brodude fistbump style that's been so popularized recently. There were moments in all of those games where I could feel the writers taking shots at my expectations and it was almost chilling. Spec Ops' "Do you feel like a hero yet?" and Far Cry's "You won." both just made me sit down the controller and feel kinda terrible (in the best possible way). Some very subversive stuff getting through the AAA shooter channel right now.

Very, very good editorial. This is what I'd like to see more of on this site. I'm also excited to see what shooters have in store in the future. Bioshock Infinite will obviously give us food for thought for years to come, but I'm really intrigued by the possibilities of the new Halo trilogy. I was really impressed by Halo 4's story, and can't wait until Halo 5.

Right? Like, there was TONS of backstory to be found via Halo 4's terminals (bummer they were kinda hidden). And I loved the brief exploration of Master Chief's upbringing. Obviously people who read the novels will know a lot of that, but I'm glad it was in the game. Anyways, thanks for reading!

As soon as I finished the campaign I got the first series of Halo novels. I'm really enjoying them so far, and I'm very happy this new trilogy seems to be focusing on the same style of character development.

Agreed. I researched Halo lore for about 2hrs after beating Halo 4.
