Achievements/Trophies are a heavily ingrained part of gaming now, and I think it goes without saying that they will still be there in the next generation. They are just a natural part of games any more.

If you think trophies and achievements are utterly meaningless you must think that games are just pointless wastes of time. What actual benefit do you get from playing a game? How is it pointless to be given an objective in a trophy, but not when the game makes you do something to move on? It's not just to show off, they let you see how you're progressing through games.

Not quite sure why your rant is tied to my mostly unrelated post.

Well then, that was a huge rant over "I think it goes without saying that PS4 will still have achievements" This reply doesn't even make any sense to what it's replying to...

It wasn't really a reply to the comment, more adding to the discussion about trophies, and was directed at Tom, who claimed that trophies are completely pointless. I like trophies, they add another layer to playing a particular game, and to playing games in general. What's wrong with having a metagame in gaming?

There will definitely be trophies, you could see the trophy level of the profile they (briefly) showed.

How about what the hell the touch screen on the front of the controller will be used for? If it had a display, that'd make sense and be really useful for inventory/home screen UI. But without touch, it's like the back of a vita... but on the front where there's conveniently already buttons and joysticks. And nothing I saw made use of it at all. So I'm just not sure what the hell it's there for.

The only question I care about is when can I preorder the PS4?
  • shawksta - February 21, 2013 4:02 a.m.

Holiday 2013 is a hard push, but we can definitely expect a delay, who knows. Considering the push with Gakai, itll probably be the main thing to push your PSN annount onto PS4, but we'll see.
  • avantguardian - February 21, 2013 5:18 p.m.

that's a lot of pushing. on the toilet when you wrote that? :)

I want PS4 to have trophies, as well as still keeping my PS3 ones. I've grown to like them, as they're much easier to appreciate than just a leaderboard or something. However, if it demands always-on connectivity, I absolutely will not be buying. Ever. That's just not how I roll.

I am very excited about the ps4 after watching the live event last night. The most worrying question for me is can we realistically use all the online features the ps4 is offering. Fibre Optics will be in my area soon, which I will upgrade to, but will that be enough, what if the connection is unstable, and can I play my games when the internet goes down?

The slide about trophies sounded more like the author's personal opinion rather than actual facts or what most people think or feel. If people didn't care about trophies/achievements anymore, why are there entire websites updated daily and with thousands of users visiting daily? Furthermore, if people had stopped caring, then you would have started seeing PS3 titles that didn't included trophies anymore, because unlike achievements, trophies is something you actively had to include and load up into the game/system. If every single game still has them, without fail, is because people obviously still care about them. And personally, I'd definitely want them to be on PS4 still. Yes, what matters about a game is the experience, and over obsessing over fictional points can be annoying and stupid. But on the flip-side, achievements/trophies can be a cool incentive to extend the longevity of a game, or to even challenge you to vary your game style. I'd say it's better to have them, than not.

Achievements/Trophies are one of those weird things where I'm teetering on the edge of being done with them. Obviously some of them are really cool, fun challenges to work for, but a bunch are just minor distractions that have, at best, a mildly amusing joke (that's probably a reference to a two year old meme). Back when I was still getting a feel for the current generation of consoles, one games actually made achievements more than a pile of imaginary points: Mass Effect. You got real in game benefits for clearing them which gave more incentive to collect them. Then I never saw any game do that again (at least not making every achievement give some sort of bonus). Honestly, even if the games stopped including Trophies, plenty of games would still have their own set of challenges, like how Borderlands had a ton of in game challenges separate from achievements. But I don't see any real reason for Achievements/Trophies to disappear: anyone tired of them can turn of notifications.

I'm fairly certain that during the "Social" side of the presentation, the four trophies were displayed on a user's account on the PS4 UI.
  • XNam360 - February 21, 2013 7:30 p.m.

Yeah, that slide was completely out of place. It was just someone's personal complaint, not a widespread opinion among gamers at all.
  • ultimatepunchrod - February 20, 2013 10:02 p.m.

Sony has told Eurogamer that it WILL NOT block used game sales. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-02-21-sony-tells-eurogamer-playstation-4-will-not-block-used-games
  • BladedFalcon - February 20, 2013 10:08 p.m.

Yep, it has been confirmed that it won't block used games, so yay for that!
