Where not to stand in Halo 3
Bungie's 'heatmaps' reveal top camp spots, death zones
Nov 13, 2007
Bungie must be kicking its heels since the launch of Halo 3. We've already had special gametypes, endless community support and what not, but now the developer's idle hands have stumbled upon a rather interesting use of in-game stats - Bungie calls them 'heatmaps'.
By gathering stats covering kills and deaths from the thousands of Halo 3 online faceoffs, Bungie can produce overhead views of each level, complete with heat patterns showing pockets of action. It's all a bit hard to explain in words, so peer down at the kind of results you can get...
The shot on the left shows the origin of all killing shots from gamers using the Spartan Laser on Valhalla, while the shot on the left shows where all deaths occuredfrom shots by the Spartan Laser. Obviously, with Valhalla's man-cannons, it's clear that spearing your fellow fighters is best (or, at least, mostly) done from the high land at the end of the cannon's flight path.
Hit the next page, too, for a shot showing all deaths that occur on the Highground map...
