Mutantkind was on the brink of extinction in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but for this summer's followup, X-Men: Apocalypse, it's the whole world on the line. Speaking in a new Q&A video, writer Simon Kinberg called Apocalypse "the biggest X-Men movie we've ever done," a proclamation made possible by the film's villain - also named Apocalypse.
"This is a character who is way more powerful than any of the characters we’ve ever seen in the franchise. He’s more interested in the sort of survival of the fittest; the strongest, no matter what they may be, surviving and making essentially a better world." That sounds pretty much on-point with the Apocalypse of the comics - a nigh-immortal, blue-skinned villain who unleashed a deadly virus in an effort to wipe the planet's slate clean, as it were.
It's a blueprint for some heavy stakes and major action sequences, but Kinberg also suggests that it'll be the most touching X-Men movie, too. "We’ve never done one of these movies where the whole world ... there’s like an extinction-level threat to the world. The whole world’s at stake. And I think it’s the biggest emotionally, too, partly because the situation is so heightened, the dynamic between the main characters is as heightened and intense as it’s ever been."
Directed by Bryan Singer and starring Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, and Olivia Munn, X-Men: Apocalypse opens on May 19 in the UK, and May 26 in the US.
