No policer starring Daniel Auteuil, Olivier Gourmet and Mathieu Kassovitz can be all bad.

But after an impressively choreographed opening set-piece – in which a sniper opens fire on cops attempting to intercept a paris bank heist – The Lookout soon runs aground.

Serviceably directed by italy’s Michele Placido ( Romanzo Criminale ), the fault lies mainly with the script.

Auteuil’s vengeance-seeking detective is saddled with a family backstory involving a failed secret mission in Afghanistan, but the biggest overstep is having Gourmet’s crooked surgeon double up as a serial killer.
