Actor David Harbour may be the latest actor to make the jump from DC to a Marvel movie. The Wrap reports that the Stranger Things star, who appeared in a small role in the Oscar-winning Suicide Squad, is now being eyed to play Cable in Deadpool 2 and he’s gone as far as screen-testing for the part.
Cable, of course, is the time traveling mutant son of Cyclops in the X-Men comics. He has a cybernetic eye and a bionic arm, and in some comics, he’s skilled at telepathy and telekinesis. His backstory is fairly complex (his mom is a clone of Jean Grey), and with the X-Men franchise’s continuity already too complicated as it is, it remains to be seen how writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will tackle that aspect of the character.
Backstory aside, Harbour seems like an inspired choice for Cable. His work on Stranger Things has already proven he can excel as a gruff, physical straight man dealing with insanity all around him, and I think he’d be an excellent foil for the motor-mouthed Ryan Reynolds. And from a business perspective, Harbour currently has the right level of popularity to be a cheaper choice for the studio than an A-list actor, but he still brings with him a certain amount of cultural cache because of his fan-favorite role on the streaming series.
Considering how meta Deadpool is, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Wade Wilson cracked a Stranger Things joke on screen if Harbour ends up securing the part. But what do you all think?
