Star Wars' Carrie Fisher is giving 'advice from the dark side' in new column. Yes, really

One of the best things about Star Wars: The Force Awakens is that it had a great balance of youth and experience, and there's no doubt that John Boyega and Daisy Ridley benefited from the wisdom of veterans like Harrison Ford and others while making the movie. Now Carrie Fisher - who reprised the role of General Leia in The Force Awakens and will do so again for Star Wars 8 - is looking to pass on some life wisdom to all corners of the galaxy with a new column in The Guardian titled 'Advice from the Dark Side'. Here's an excerpt from her first post:

"So then either judge me, or disagree with me, or tell me I’m fat and don’t look good for my age (your words not mine) or find some solace and inspiration. If my life wasn’t funny it would just be true and that’s unacceptable. Tell me your story, I’ll tell you mine. We’ll meet at the pub and get back into the swing. What have you got to lose? Time mostly (which is a human construct), but you’ll have an anecdote and advice in exchange – who could ask for anything more?"

At first glance this news is a little strange - Fisher is probably not a name you'd think of when coming up with potential advice columnists - but on further reflection it's a pretty great idea. Fisher is nothing if not an entertaining personality, and she's developed a reputation for being very open and frank on many issues. Indeed, she's done a lot of living in her 59 years on planet Earth, and her self-deprecating style is perfect for those seeking a little guidance.

The post doesn't say how regularly the column will run, but you can send Fisher your questions at

Directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Laura Dern, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Gwendoline Christie, and Benicio del Toro, Star Wars: Episode 8 opens in cinemas on December 15, 2017.
