Low-key, unorthodox vampire movie

Echoes of George Romero’s Martin haunt, but don’t overwhelm, writer-director Scott Leberecht’s debut.

Jacob (Zak Kilberg), who works as a night security guard, suffers from a rare skin condition that makes him allergic to sunlight.

He wolfs down quantities of food but remains skinny and anaemic; only fresh blood from the local butcher will satisfy his hunger.

Then he meets a girl... Leberecht plays games with vampire lore, but skirts around it with a subtlety and delicacy that lends his film emotional depths rare in low-budget horror.

Fine use of gritty urban locations, too.
