id Software's John Carmack turned heads at this year's Quakecon when he revealed his studio's intentions to bring a RAGE spin-off game to iOS devices before the full console version drops in September 2011. Now, after some degree of hype and healthy skepticism, Carmack has tweeted that the on-railer shooter has been approved and will be opening fire on Apple's app store as early as tomorrow morning.
Powered by id's Tech 5 engine, RAGE: Mutant Bash TV is a custom made game for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. In it, players are tasked with surviving an onslaught of mutant baddies for a fictional post-apocalyptic TV show. The gameplay will focus heavily on fast-action shooting, head shots and high scoring.
Again, for people in the back, this is not RAGE for iPhones, but instead a spin-off which just so happens to sport some of the best graphics to be seen on the small screen.
"We do not have the full RAGE game running on iOS, and we do not plan to try. While it would (amazingly!) actually be possible to compile the full-blown PC/console RAGE game for an iPhone4 with some effort, it would be a hopelessly bad idea," explains Carmack in a recent (and massive) post on Bethesda's forums, adding, “What we do have is something unlike anything ever seen on the iOS platforms. It is glorious, and a lot of fun.”
It's also fairly cheap. RAGE: Mutant Bash TV is said to be priced $0.99 for standard 3G devices and $1.99 for the HD-friendly iPad or iPhone 4.
“Since we weren’t going to be able to have lots of hugely expansive levels, we knew that there would be some disappointment if we went out at a high price point, no matter how good it looked. We have experimented with a range of price points on the iPhone titles so far, but we had avoided the very low end.”
Carmack has stated that an Android version is planned, but that RAGE won't becoming to Windows Phone 7.
