Celluloid fans get a longer version of Tarantino's The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino's quest to shoot everything on actual film stock is no secret. He loves celluloid. Heck, he recently admitted that he records shows and movies from the TV onto VHS cassettes. His romance with the format continues this December when The Hateful Eight rolls out in Ultra Panavision 70mm for a limited roadshow, a version that's set to include an extra six minutes of footage compared to the general multiplex release two weeks later.

“The roadshow version has an overture and an intermission, and it will be three hours, two minutes,” he tells Variety. “The multiplex version is about six minutes shorter, not counting the intermission time, which is about 12 minutes.” This extended six minutes will consist of several 'tweaked' scenes dotted throughout the film as opposed to one long sequence that would leave the multiplex cut uneven.

"The 70 is the 70," he adds. "You've paid the money. You've bought your ticket. So you're there. I've got you. But I actually changed the cutting slightly for a couple of the multiplex scenes because it's not that. Now it's on Showtime Extreme. You're watching it on TV and you just kind of want to watch a movie on your couch. Or you're at Hot Dog on a Stick and you just want to catch a movie."

There's no telling whether or not those extended scenes might make it onto a home video release, so if you're a fan of the fast-talkin' filmmaker you might want a ticket for The Hateful Eight roadshow which begins in the US on December 8. If you're happy to check out the multiplex cut, a widespread general release follows in both the US and UK on January 8.
