Bungie claims MMO announcement was a joke

Hey, remember when Bungie's lead network engineer, David Aldridge,announced the studio's next projectwas a massively multiplayer action game? Remember how we all laughed and high-fived each other because we knew it was too crazy to be true? No? You took that seriously? Well, good sir, it appears your sarcasm detector is in woeful need of repair, because according to Bungie, it was all a big joke.

Shortly after Aldridge produced a slide referring toan unnamedMMO project (one that would most definitely not be “WoW is space,” he later clarified) at GDC, Bungieposted a statement to its blogdismissing his announcement as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the MMO rumors circling the studio, explaining:

“Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors. Unfortunately, most people can’t figure David out – they can’t process him. And we don’t expect them to. You can’t process David Aldridge with a normal brain. You’d need tiger blood and Adonis DNA.”

Bungie also posted an email from Aldridge, claiming, “FYI. The tape will exonerate me, but I'm sorry anyway. :(.”

We don't know what's funnier: the fact Bungie has a solid handle on Charlie Sheen quotes, or it's really hoping the gaming community forgets all aboutthis MMO hilarity so it can announce the project to greater effect at a later date *coughE32011cough*. Sorry, must be something in our throats.
