Angry Birds Space! touching down March 22

Rovio is teaming with NASA and National Geographic to launch a full-on sequel to its insanely popular Angry Birds app, entitled Angry Birds Space!

Billed on the Finnish studio's site as “the biggest game launch since the original Angry Birds”, the game will see the world famous birds take their antics to outer space on March 22. Rovio did not specify how the sequel will expand upon the juggernaut franchise, except to say it will feature new birds, zero gravity gameplay mechanics, and new twists on familiar Angry Birds elements. It did, however, post a website and the following teaser trailer featuring the title's logo and...well...that's pretty much it.

In a chat with Yahoo! Games, Rovio's North American GM Andrew Stalbow explained Angry Birds Space! aims to take the series' spot-on physics to new heights, noting, "We think fans are really going to love it because we've already gotten amazing feedback on the physics of our games. They're so accurate and easy to grasp that some teachers use Angry Birds in their lessons about projectile motion."

Speaking to the sequel's promotional allies, he added: "Science and education are very important to us, and we're very excited to have NASA and National Geographic as launch partners on Angry Birds Space."

In addition to the game itself, Rovio indicated it will be boosting the release of Angry Birds Space! with new Angry Birds animated shorts, toys, and other multimedia tie-ins. However, considering the original just passed the 700 million mark and launched on Facebook, it's unlikely a new Angry Birds game requires any support.
