Poor Bloodstained. The crowdfunded spiritual successor to Castlevania held the title of most-funded video game project on Kickstarter for barely more than a month before Yu Suzuki's Shenmue 3 claimed the title for itself. With less than a day left in its campaign, Shenmue 3 surpassed Bloodstained's impressive $5,545,991 record; as of this writing, it's hovering around $5.6 million funded, with 12 hours left before the campaign closes.
Originally revealed during the Sony press conference, the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter was another in a long list of E3 2015 surprises that also included a resurrected The Last Guardian, a Final Fantasy 7 remake and more. The Shenmue games have never been hugely popular, but their designs have been both influential and well ahead of their time. There are reasons why people love Shenmue, and today they've put their money where their fandom is.
