New Gears of War 3 trailer is predictably maudlin. Unpredictably, is that General Raam?
Is he back from the dead, or just an arty narrative trick?
Beautifully chorographed, bleak CGI of Marcus and co. getting their arses kicked in a long, drawn-out way? Check. Maudlin, slightly incongruous contemporary soundtrack with a modicum of arty, indie-cred to emphasise how poetic and sad the oh-so-poetic-and-sad game really is, underneath all the curb-stomping and chainsaw dismemberment? Check. Ominous cut to black at the dramatic climax? Check also. Yep, this is a Gears of War trailer alright. It has passed all mandatory checks, and is now ready for your consumption. So consume.
But while none of the above elements might be surprising, what certainly is surprising - unless I'm very much mistaken - is what looks to be the appearance of long-since-offed Gears 1 bad guy General Raam leading the Locust charge at the beginning. Take a look, and we will discuss.
