MTG Assassin's Creed brings da Vinci and Cleopatra to the battlefield, fans hold out for more historical crossovers

It’s no secret that Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond sets are home to some of the weirdest cards in MTG history. If you’ve ever wanted to pit Optimus Prime against a Dalek, getting your hands on some UB is the best way to do it. While on first look, MTG Assassin’s Creed delivers sci-fi elements, it does include some unlikely creatures that are a little closer to home.

As expected, the upcoming set includes Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, both iconic protagonists from early on in the video game’s series’ 16-year run. However, there were two reveals that were a tad more unexpected: Leonardo da Vinci and Cleopatra, Exiled Pharaoh.

While fictionalized versions of both Leo and Cleo have been featured in the Assassin’s Creed, the inclusion of real-world figures has players wondering who's next to be plucked from the history books and dropped into one of the best card games

Often the most charming part of a Universes Beyond set is seeing the way familiar worlds can be molded onto Magic: The Gathering mechanics. What we've seen so far from the Assassin's Creed release is no exception. Who better than da Vinci, the inventor of the helicopter, to sport some Thopter token generation abilities?

Though this Renaissance man isn't the only historical icon that pairs well with the MTG format. Thanks to the game's American Revolution setting, any card based on Assassin's Creed III is just crying out for the patriotic color combo of Red, White, and Blue. However, founding fathers like Benjamin Franklin and George Washington are especially fitting choices for Jeskai (Red-White-Blue).

So they’re printing irl historical figures in the Assassin’s Creed set…yknow what that means? 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅 from r/mtg

Given that we now live in a world where the power and toughness of artists, philosophers, and world leaders can be compared like an incredibly odd game of Top Trumps, I'm ready to get down with the weirdness and brainstorm some of my own.

While the accuracy of the documentation surrounding the Golden Age of Piracy is debatable, that's not a debate I'm interested in having right now. Pirates are cool. That said, with Pirate as an established creature type, we've accumulated plenty of Blackbeard types already.

So, while it's a total longshot, I want Mary Read in Magic: The Gathering Assassin's Creed. As she famously disguised herself to gain access to naval ships, this makes for a fun opportunity for a play on the Morph ability. Oh, the possibilities.

For now though, Magic players' time traveling plans will have to be put on standby. Without our very own Animus, we won't meet these heroes of yesteryear until the release of Magic: The Gathering Assassin's Creed on July 5.
