It's a good thing that Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is still a lot of fun offline, because its first few days have been plagued with slow servers and extended downtime. Now Konami says on its official status page that servers for all the systems should be operating normally - except for PS4.
Konami first disabled some of MGS5's online features, then pulled the servers down to work on them. They've recently started coming back online (I watched the PC servers tick over from "undergoing maintenance" to "operating normally" while writing this) so PS4 likely isn't far behind. Hopefully the online experience will be much improved for players on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One now - but if you find your game starting to lag again, there's always the offline mode.
Unfortunately, even if you're not interested in comparing stats with friends or raiding their Forward Operating Bases, you will need to connect online to transfer over your data from Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. It's far from essential, but it's nice to have the extra support staff from your earlier exploits, not to mention access to Camp Omega. Either way, this will all hopefully be sorted by the time Metal Gear Online launches in October.

I got a BA in journalism from Central Michigan University - though the best education I received there was from CM Life, its student-run newspaper. Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've previously been a news intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and was formerly a staff writer at GamesRadar.
