Helldivers 2 lead promises "meaningful changes" after "painful to read" criticism of Arrowhead and the state of the game fills uncensored Reddit AMA
"Thank you to everyone who participated constructively, especially when you were angry"
Former Arrowhead CEO and current Helldivers 2 creative lead Johan Pilestedt committed to an "unfiltered" Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit this weekend and got precisely what he was searching for: enough uncensored criticism to make Botticelli question the Birth of Venus.
Like that nude lady sticking out of the half-shell, players are being bold as they demand harmony in Helldivers 2, and Pilestedt wants to give it to them, writing in an update to his AMA announcement post on r/HelldiversUnfiltered that fans clearly "want the game to deepen" and hope for better communication from Arrowhead. So, he says, "This week; I will talk to the direction team about how we can align more with the expectations that you have on the development of Helldivers."
"I will report back once every other week, starting this week, with where we are, what our thoughts are and how we are moving forward," Pilestedt says, wanting to provide players "more meaningful reasons to keep playing beyond the next warbond. You want underused equipment to have a purpose, long-term progression to feel worthwhile, and community actions to result in memorable moments again."
Article continues belowHe makes no guarantees as to what tensions will be massaged first – the most upvoted questions from the Helldivers 2 community wonder why balance patches rarely address underutilized weaponry, or why various progression systems are still so shallow.
"Helldivers 2 is a large, complicated game, and some of these issues are genuinely difficult," says Pilestedt. "But that's not an excuse for standing still. There is a lot of work that is in progress that we will see the fruits of in the coming weeks, months and year."
The lead continues, "I did this AMA because I saw the disappointment, [criticism] and mistrust in this subreddit. And it got to me, I wanted to get a better sense and understanding of what was at the heart of it. A lot of the points that you make are fair. Some are very painful to read. But I know that it comes from a group of players that care deeply about Helldivers and wants it to remain special."
Those dedicated players he's talking about are… conflicted about this weepy reaction to their woes. Arrowhead said in 2025 it was going to make "a big step forward" in the way it updates Helldivers 2, and current studio CEO Shams Jorjani acknowledged that same year that "we screw up all the time." Some fans are tired of hearing it repeated for another year. They scoff about Pilestedt's latest proclamation of change in a separate thread, observing, "Things seemed like they would change after 60 days too. Plus this is like the second or third time they've promised 'better communication.'"
Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more
But, in the dissonance, Pilestedt and Helldivers 2 fans can at least agree that no one would be whining if they didn't truly love the game. Pilestedt signs off with a "Thank you to everyone who participated constructively, especially when you were angry. That means you still care."
In fans' separate thread reacting to this statement, one person reiterates in a reply with nearly 1,000 upvotes that "criticism exist because people care." So when it comes to the future of Helldivers 2 – and, honestly, everything else – I think there's hope as long as someone cares deeply enough to create it.
…More Warbonds, anyone?
