"If I told you, I'd have to kill you": Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 writer can't say where she wants the series to go next, even though she'd "love to"

The lead writer behind last year's most-acclaimed game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is keeping a tight lid on the potential future of the series.

In an interview with GamesRadar+ at the Game Developers Conference, we asked Sandfall Interactive's lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen about where she wants to see the series go next - that is, if Clair Obscur ends up turning into a multi-game series in the first place.

"I cannot tell you these things," she half-sings. "If I told you, I'd have to kill you. I'm sorry. I would love to tell people, because, as my husband knows, I cannot keep a secret. I love sharing information. I just want to share everything with everybody. But no, I cannot. So sorry."

Make of that answer what you will. Maybe being tight-lipped about the Clair Obscur franchise actually becoming a franchise is telling enough about what its future holds.

Regardless, Sandfall has plenty of options ahead of it. Perhaps it can go down the Final Fantasy route with stories that are largely disconnected from each other, while only sharing some loose iconography here and there. Or maybe there's still an appetite for more direct sequels and prequels, like a Clair Obscur: Expedition 34. Your guess is as good as mine, however.

Clair Obscur turning into a type of anthology series would at least make some kind of sense on paper. Svedberg-Yen previously called Final Fantasy "a huge influence on the game" and everyone on the team, and found it "crazy" that multiple Final Fantasy veterans were now fans of Clair Obscur.
