"Oh hi Switch 2": Mewgenics port looks imminent as The Binding of Isaac co-creator shows off the new roguelike running on Nintendo's hardware

It seems like Mewgenics, the hit roguelike from the team behind Super Meat Boy, might be coming to the Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 relatively soon. Edmund McMillen, one of the co-creators of the feline tactics-RPG, shared a brief clip of it running on Nintendo's hardware, inspiring considerable excitement, followed by another video showcasing a PS5.

On Twitter, McMillen posted a little 14-second snippet of Mewgenics on the Switch 2. The video is taken with a phone while the project runs on the system, to prove it's all legitimate. "Oh hi Switch 2!" says the caption.

It gets the point across effectively: Mewgenics is now running pretty stably on the console, making the port feel closer than ever. Meanwhile, Tyrone Rodriguez, an executive producer on The Binding of Isaac, shared a video of him playing a port on PS5. Going by the replies, people are more than ready.

"I liked the game, but stopped playing on PC and am waiting for it on Switch 2! Hopefully it arrives ASAP," says one response. "I don't have the Switch 2 but I buy it only for Mewgenics," says another. "WE ARE SOO CLOSE," a third states, with a mockup of what a Mewgenics Switch 2 case might look like.

Much like Super Meat Boy and the genre-defining The Binding of Isaac series, Mewgenics is perfect for going hybrid between home console and handheld. The cartoony visuals are pleasing on screens big and small, and the gameplay loop of going on runs and experimenting consistently makes it a strong commuting and travel game.

As of now, the cat-based breed-a-thon is only available on Steam, though that definitely hasn't hindered sales any. Anecdotally, a number of people I know who're playing it are doing so on the Steam Deck anyway, already indicating where the demand lies in terms of platforms.

Should McMillen and his co-cat-spirator, Tyler Glaiel, incorporate cross-progression, they'll likely see healthy sales from people doubling up where they have Mewgenics. There's no release window just yet, but it seems soon. We'll keep you informed.

Steam expert advises devs stick to the "Little League" section of idle games and friendslop before attempting anything like Binding of Isaac or Mewgenics: "Then you can make your dream."
