Pokemon senior director and producer, Shigeru Ohmori, praises the series' switch from link cable to wireless communication when reminiscing on his time at Game Freak following the announcement that Kanto remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen, will be launching on Nintendo Switch next week.
February 27 is better known as Pokemon Day to fans of the ball-bound beasts, when, in what has become a yearly tradition, a Pokemon Presents stream is held with the biggest series news for the upcoming year or so. Pocket Monster Christmas came a little early this year with the announcement that the generation three remakes of the original games will be available to purchase on the blessed day.
Fans aren't the only ones nostalgic for the Game Boy Advance games that first launched in 2004, as Ohmori, who worked as a game and map designer on the twin games, shares his nostalgia surrounding their technological advancements.
とても懐かしい!!当時もマップ設計をしたり、ワイヤレスアダプタを使った、ユニオンルームを作ったりしてました。通信ケーブルから無線通信へと切り替わり、「科学の力ってすげー!」と感動しながら作ってました。 https://t.co/XAqZwOFHaNFebruary 20, 2026
In a tweet that has been translated by GamesRadar+, Ohmori writes, "This is so nostalgic!! Back then I was designing maps, and making union rooms using the wireless adaptor. Switching from link cables to wireless communication, I was absolutely thrilled to be making it. I thought 'now that's the power of science!'"
The Switch versions of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen will feature the same wireless connectivity as the original games, meaning that players can trade with each other locally but not online. However, we're begging The Pokemon Company for the chance to transfer 'mons caught in the upcoming games into the cloud-based service, Pokemon Home, but there's been no confirmation of this yet.
